Human

A race with many strengths, humans are one of the most widely spread sapient species over the continent, being found from the Bonelands in the south to the Frozen Expanse in the north and everywhere in between. They are unique among the other species in that they are highly adaptable, able to survive and create homes in even the most inhospitable conditions.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The majority of humans are gathered in the Bonelands and in the Plains regions, but can be found as far north as the Frozen Expanse and as far west as the Dragon's Nests.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

While the kingdom of Pinar is no more, the city-states of Meloria, Calaris, and Pinar still stand, in addition to smaller outposts such as Bastion in the west and None in the east.   While religion is not as prominent in human society as it may be in Elvish or Orcish society, some organizations thrive. In Meloria, many are part of the Engine, a organization devoted to Gond All-Smith, the patron of the city. Pinarians tend to worship the Seven, a group of seven major deities that govern the major areas of life in Pinar, although some belong to more minor sects.

Average Technological Level

Humans are generally accredited for the discovery of electricity, which is used in Meloria to run underground lighting, the train system, and many machines. They, along with the gnomes, also designed the first motorized vehicles, guns, and other important machines.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The major language of humans is called Common by most people. It varies significantly from region to region, but full-fledged dialects are rare.

Common Taboos

Most humans find malevolent magics abhorrent, sometimes to the degree of outlawing them. In addition, contact with extraplanar beings, excluding gods, was seen as an immoral and wicked action in Pinar in ancient times, and the sentiment has continued into the present day.

History

Humans are believed to have first made their start in what is now the coastal desert called the Bonelands, making their way up from the coast towards the Plains as their environment turned from forest and grassland to sands. Many humans made their way up the western coast and settled into the Dragon's Nests on the western side of the mountains, but some came straight north, clashing with the Orcish clans of the Plains and eventually claiming a large section of the territory for themselves. For the better part of the last 500 years, the human Kingdom of Pinar held control of this territory, but eventually the kingdom crumbled, leaving a large human population in the Plains city of Meloria and crumbling roads to show for it.   But while the kingdom fell apart, individual cities did not, and the cities of Pinar and Calaris still stand at the edge of the Bonelands and the sea.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Tensions are high between humans and many other races, the legacy of the ancient conquerors of the Plains. Most notable is the division between humans and Orcs, who were the original owners of the lands that Pinar conquered.
