The Donus' diary Document in Phaldorya (Eng) | World Anvil

The Donus' diary

The legendary epistolary collection that commonly goes under the name of Donus' diary it a book composed by the letters between the magician Donus and a woman by the name of Fabia, some scholar suggest the two could have been into a relation. Although the book is rare and only a few copies of it may still exist, the theories and implications about its content are widespread in the magic user's community.

Purpose

It is commonly believed that this correspondence collection, predating of a millenium the conflagration, groups the letter sent by a magician named Donus to his friend, or possibly lover, Fabia. It is written in High Kharmian therefore where hard to translate, since the knowledge of this language is lost and only some important philologist can partially translate its content. The interesting aspect about this, otherwise unassuming, book is that contrast with the foundation stones of the Mages' conclave putting in evidence how normal it was for magicians of that time to consider magic as a whole, without dividing it into schools. The theories about the content of this book are at the base of a secret magical society called the Discordant, mages that although officially accept the guidelines of the Conclave, dispute the needs of separating magic in branches or schools.

Document Structure

Publication Status

The exhistence of this book is officially disputed, some copies of it may exist in the depths of the Cathedral of Be Chuille or in the Oghma's library, although they are subject of a rigid control. The Society of Discordants aims to find a copy and a way to translate and make public the contents of this book.

Interesting! I wonder what makes the book so controversial? I suppose the division of schools of magic? I'm not entirely sure! But it's a very good article. :D

The division of schools of magic in the history of Phaldorya is an imposed, sometimes self-imposed, system to prevent too much power to concentrate in the hands of one magician at once. A few events in the history demonstrate that this assumption is wrong, but it has been transmitted through the centuries and once dogmas settled in the mind of a community they are hard to fight, especially when fueled by the fear of powerful magicians diffused in the commoners. Therefore there's a strong division between the ones that used this dogma to control their power (Conclave and inquisition, but not exclusively) and those that for love of truth, but sometimes for the desire of power, would like to see these restrictions fall. It's hard to explain briefly, but it one of the foundations of Phaldorya and hopefully at some point will be clear reading the first few articles so that these will become less difficult to understand.

Sounds like it would be an interesting book to read. I wonder if they were friends or only lovers.

It is hard to say to be fair as different cultures have different approaches to relationships that a term in a letter can easily be misunderstood. I remind when I used to live in Yorkshire people used to call each other "love" that for me, being an Italian, was rather uncomfortable.
