These big fellas are wonderful boating companions. Ya gotta be careful though, they get excited easily and can knock over your boat on accident. Taking the time to provide them extra play and enrichment usually helps.
Odders are a unique mammal known for their friendly and energetic disposition. No one is 100% certain of their exact origins. The main theory is that they were regular otters affected by
distortion sickness from a
reality rift. That original population would then relocate to a safer area and grow from there.
A second theory is that these creatures didn't originate from Phaiyon. They could be one of the many species that arrived to the planet via walking through a rift. In either case, odders didn't pose a threat and were left alone aside from some domestication.
Physical Traits
Odders are larger than standard otters. They have long muscular bodies with a thick tail and six legs. Their ears aren't prominent and they are able to close them off from taking in water. Odders have eyes capable of seeing through dark, murky water.
Their fur is short and slick. Coat colors are usually different shades of purple or magenta. There are no records of any patterns appearing in their fur.
Odders have wide webbed paws with thick sharp claws. These make swimming easy. The claws help them dig around for food. They also use them to grip the river bed and launch their bodies forward for a speed boost.
Diet
Odders are carnivores and hunt for their food. They'll eat fish, amphibians, some reptiles, mollusks, and crustaceans. They take turns hunting for their pod and will usually eat together as a group.
Reproduction and Growth
Odders reproduce sexually and are capable of birthing litters once a year. They reach maturity at 5 years old and typically mate for life. Pods contain between one and three families who share the responsibility of raising the young.
Litter size ranges from 3 to 6 odder pups. Even though they can, they often don't breed every year. It depends on their current pod size and resource availability.
Habitat
Inisglas is the only island where odders have been found. They live in and around the Starfall river and its connected lakes.
Domestication
Odders are not pets, but have been trained by locals to pull river boats and assist with fishing. There are a couple certified breeders allowed to raise them in small numbers.
