The Eun Plague (ɛun)

Beginning during the Eun War, a sickness began to affect goblin, hobgoblin, gnomes, dwarves, and the Svor. It was initially localized to the southern regions, but quickly spread. It is believed that the great warlock general, Umplaur the Joiner, was himself infected and dying when he lead his armies to their final victory against the Crahn at Aricc-nor. It was for this reason that he was willing to use death magic to curse the Crahn and killed himself to activate the magic.   However, the curse merely sealed the Crahn in their ancient caverns and galleries of Aricc-nor. Whereas the goblins of the realms began to succumb. The Rheddor and the Laohor sealed their borders and left their kin outside of their impregnable cities, to succumb. The Òrennéii who were not entombed at Aricc-nor, or had already fallen to the Eun Chi armies, were utterly wiped out by the plague. None survived.   Although, intitially perceived as divine favour for the Eun and their allies, each subethnicity eventually also succumbed. The survivors fell into barbarism. The plague continued.   Although, the humans of the realm were also susceptible to the Eun Plague, its effects were minor, short-term, and rarely lethal. Knowing the bellicose history of the Eun tribes, various human groups aggressively defended themselves from the goblins, perceiving them as warlike and plague bringers (a not inaccurate assessment).   It is believed that by the end of the First Century Previous to the Qh'énnish Ascension, the goblins and hobgoblins, were extinct. Occasional mention in arcane texts reference some hobgoblins having fled safely into the Rift. If true, there maybe some still extant, but not in any significant number, and none have been seen in centuries.

Manifestation

Because of its longevity and lethality, the Eun Plague was ultimately thought to be supernatural in origin. It would seem likely that it was made(?) to target and destroy the goblins of PÈRYL, perhaps by gnome necromancers (if such a thing existed). However, that the plague affected all the various tribes and races, the dwarves of PÈRYL inclusive, this is largely considered ahistorical.   One group that was never known to succumb to the Eun Plague, the trolls of the Black Isles (BkBrche), were possibly responsible, but they were allied with the Eun Chi and Eunnu, and they too closed their borders when the worst of the plague was devastating the continent. Indeed, they themselves became practically mythic having not returned as a power on the continent well into the Ptarshakkian expansion into their traditional holdings.   Ultimately, the etiology of the Eun Plague is unknown.   The plague had five stages: 1. Initial infection. Symptoms would include headaches, nausea, disorientation. It would be brief, clearing in a few days. Some individuals did not experience this stage. 1-3 days after infection; lasts for one week. 2. Blotches would appear on the skin. Lesions oozing pus and bile. The blotches would always appear as colour that would prominently contrast the victim's natural pigmentation. Very quickly they could not be concealed in anyway. 5-6 days after the initial week. 3. Fever, ruptured capillaries causing bleeding outward and internally. Violent rage. 6-8 days after the initial week. 4. Utter bodily failure. Tissue necrotizes. Members shrivel and drop off. 7-10 days after the initial week. 5. Death.   The infectiousness of the plague was the inverse of its damage to the body, that is, as the body worsened it became less infectious. However, because the initial period was often unnoticeable, it was most deadly as a result, spreading well before any precautions could be found.

Localization

It seemed that the Eun Plague did not like to pass over salt water: none of the islander colonies ever succumbed to the plague. In the case of the Black Isles, it was thought this was merely the trolls' (natural) immunity. However, no dwarves on the channel islands, the isle of the Rheddor, or anywhere in the Sea of Chaalai ever contracted the plague.   The Eun Chi and Eunnu were never skilled sailors; they had no navy nor any colonies off shore. This is perhaps the reason they are extinct.
