The Goblins of PÈRYL

After centuries of conflict with the dwarves of Gruthe, which culminated in the near extinction of the Òrennéii, the goblins of PÈRYL expanded quickly into the newly conquered lands only to succumb to a virulent plague.   The devastating infection destroyed the goblin civilizations and they fell into barbarity. Tribal conflicts and endemic plague further splintered and factionalized the survivors. Internecine conflict lead to the outright elimination of various tribes. Then external conflicts with dwarves, newly unified human tribes, naga and the unfortunate discovery of the trolls of the Black Isles, completed the extinction. By less than 150 years after their great triumph against their hated dwarven rivals, the Eun empire was destroyed utterly and but for isolated pockets, the goblins of Gruthe were no more.   Sister tribes in the southern jungles of Ptarro; scattered among the islands of the Myriad; and perhaps isolated places in Tzai-Léi it is believed that there remain some goblins sustained by their most powerful hobs. Although, by the first century of the Qh'énnish Ascension, the goblins and their hobgoblin arcanists were all but mythic.   The warlock Umplaur the Joiner, was the last great hobgoblin who killed themselves to enact a death curse upon the Òrennéii. In the end, the triumph of Umplaur's armies among the Eun Chi, was undercut by the disease that then destroyed their people.

Basic Information

Behaviour

After the plague, any surviving goblin was more prone to bellicosity, fearlessness, reckless behaviour, and insanity.   Even the magically talented hobgoblins were not necessarily immune. The disease-induced paranoia further complicated the lives of the rare hobgoblins by causing violent fear in their goblin kin. Many more hobgoblins were murdered at the hands of their kin even if they had themselves survived both the plague and its madness.   There have been some Svor scholars and Schqhènnites who have speculated that Umplaur the last great hobgoblin was themselves already in the plague madness and was thus willing to kill themselves to augment their death curse. Either driven by madness to self-destruction, or in a moment of clarity, wanting to die a hero before succumbing to the plague or its madness.
