Qaln (qɑln)

yeath-Qaln

Qaln, occasionally yeath-Qaln, was a Schqhènnite-trained warrior monk who was central to the creation of the Xellish Exile community. Seeing the horrors of the Great Thtetū, Qaln lead dissident Qh'énns to reject the violence of their kinsmen and to band together with the marginalized Mỳdrians, Kharnnes, and Callessai.   After the massacre at Port Mỳdr, Qaln gathered together as many allies as he could among his coreligionists and pooled their resources to purchase passage on Mbaran ships to leave Qh'énnshaiyn. Initially, it was hoped that they could travel to and settle in Dhaoshee, then Ys, but neither nation would accept the massive influx of immigrants. Rejected and imperiled by both the threat of Ptarshakkian invasion and the violence of yet another Thtetū, Qaln proclaimed that his collective of "undesireable people" would find their own land far from the conflicts that had all but destroyed them. Coining the name "Xell," from the Qh'énnish roots for nothing and people, Qaln lead his Xellish people into exile.   At this point, he was given the title yeath, for his righteous, forward-thinking and persuasive power. One of the signs that was brought forth in favour of the status, was his orange (strawberry blond) hair—orange being the colour of the yeaths—but Qaln had shaved his head in solidarity with Kharnnes among his followers, and wore but a regal moustache.   In order to secure passage for the thousands of exiles, Qaln looted a baronial store of its wealth and artifacts. It was said that he knew from whom to steal because of obscure Schqhènnite texts that detailed long forgotten caches, stores, and trophies of the various baronial houses. Because House Dermrhein had all but lead the Great Thtetū, it is said that Qaln stole primarily from Dermrhein III in an ancient ancestral mound in Rheinsroke.   Among the captured trophies, yeath-Qaln acquired a powerful artifact, the sword called the Key to Understanding, by which he became known subsequently.   Qaln's actions resulted in thousands of people who would have, at the most optimistic, suffered greatly in the coming years. After the mass exodus, the Ghestenyi did indeed conduct subsequent purges, and Ptarshakk did successfully invade the Qh'énnish mainland. Thousands died. But those that fled with yeath-Qaln, lived on, albeit in exile.   In some ways, the exile was meant to help preserve the pacific littoral lifestyle and ethos of the Mỳdrians and the foresters among the Kharnnes, but in the end, the exiles Qh'énnish norms, language, and culture dominated and the admixture of tribal groups' gestalt was distinctly Qh'énnish.   For decades the Xell Exiles lived somewhat tolerated outside the Ptarshish capital, Zann'Ro, before returning to the sea, travelling to and ultimately discovering the continent that they would settle. It became known as Rellia, and the Xells became the Rellians. Although there are both Kharnnish and Mỳdrian words extant in Rellian, it is a distinctly Qh'énnish language and cognate with the contemporary Gh'ennish of the north.   Qaln is revered across generations and a national hero to Rellia, despite his ultimately failing to preseve the Old Mỳdrian and Kharnnish ways.
