Barrens
Very much WIP
Geography
The Barrens is a cursed stretch of land going from near the south eastern Crucible wall westward around half the way towards the Living Coast.
Localized Phenomena
The Barrens is the most well defined region in existence, closely followed by The Crucible. While the Ashmounts define the latter the barrens is surrounded by magical wards. The nature of these wards is suspect to much myth and theory, though even the question of it protecting the Barrens from the outside or the outside from the Barrens is still to be answered. The section of wards connecting to the Dune Sea is the most study.
This section creates immense, constant heat. Whilst at first this may seem a problem for patrolling the region it is the greatest boon. The heat has been harvested to create Sand Riders and Dune Ships. In layman's terms the heat from the ward on the sand creates an updraft strong enough to hold the vessels anywhere from inches to meters of the ground. The further from the ward the lesser the heat and as such the less powerful the effect but the more survivable it is. This has created three lanes of traffic. The innermost ring, otherwise known as the "racing line" is anywhere from the barrier to 50 meters out, and allows for the most extreme vessels. Sand Racers that glide over the racing line are built to use the heat itself to propel them, rather than wind, and are built to allow passengers to survive the melt heat, even beyond what simple metals can. Further out patrol Dune Ships circle the boundary for signs of activity and acting as a hub for Wardens. Outside, often staying within sight of a warden ships are the Dune Barges and personal Sand Racers of civilians, using the wards as a inland trade route.
