M.I.S.T.er

"Massive-Image to Surface Tool - Now anyone can do graffiti."
Item type
Tool

Original Purpose

The Massive-Image to Surface Tool, or M.I.S.T.er, was designed for large applications of graphics or words onto almost any surface, using a tool barely larger than an impact driver. When first sold, M.I.S.T.ers were primarily purchased and used by advertising companies to quickly change billboards or advertising space on the sides of buildings. While not as fancy as the holographic advertisements mostly used in wealthy districts of a city, M.I.S.T.ed images were more than suffecient for the audience in slums.

Functionality

M.I.S.T. operates through a combination of a high-powered laser and nano-particle micro-pigmentation. First, the laser scrubs the surface, burning away dirt and debris, as well as evening out the tone of the material. Next, nano-particles are injected into the laser and "ride" the beam to the working surface. The final step is the alignment of the nano-particles, again using the laser, in order to set their color traits. Once an image is M.I.S.T.ed onto a surface, it can be removed or redesigned, or even hidden, using only the M.I.S.T.er's laser.

Private Use

While the M.I.S.T.er was intended for commercial use, some smaller private models, the M.I.S.T. Mini and M.I.S.T. Pen, are available. While the M.I.S.T.er can cover the side a garage with ease, the M.I.S.T. Mini can do home interiors with little work and have become quite common household items and a near-requirement for frequent hosts of parties. The M.I.S.T. Pen functions the same as the larger models, but operationally is no different than a regular pen while being heavier and more complicated.

Influence on Graffiti

Graffiti, or street art, started long before the space age, but was revolutionized by the advent of aerosal paints, or "spray paint", in the 1940s. While the M.I.S.T.er, or even the M.I.S.T. Mini, are capable of large works in seconds, spray paint has maintained as the favorite for street artists for nearly 200 years, mostly thanks to the low cost and disposable nature. M.I.S.T.ers have been used in a few notorious events, however, including the Print Peace campaign, which included over 20 artists using M.I.S.T.ers to cover the PRF headquarters in peace symbols and flowers.

Ooo, I love the idea of this technology! I found the description of how it worked to be very believable. I also like that you have a discussion on how it has affected graffiti (or not). I love the Print Peace campaign. :D

I love this entry and think it fits perfectly with your world. I was confused, however, on what exactly you meant by "The M.I.S.T. Pen functions the same as the larger models, but operationally is no different than a regular pen while being heavier and more complicated." If it functions the same as the larger M.I.S.T.er, why is it no different than a pen? Do you mean that you sort of... write with it while the other... "sprays"? Or just that it's about the size and feel of an ordinary pen? In which case, what do people use it for? Do they just write with it? Why would they choose this over an ordinary pen? Thanks!
