Nidri (nihd-dree)

Sat neatly in The Bright Ring , Amkunlulu Coast is a collection of coastal civilisation featuring two major cities that are ruled by a confederacy. Nidri being the first established when the gods departed from the Nucliosia, known as THE shipping settlement on the continent, if not the world.

But a couple of centuries later saw the sudden arrival of a new city: Lashell. Ripped from an aquatic Erel kingdom, a large chunk was now situated right in the middle of a series of rivers, sandbanks and reefs. Perfectly located for middle-manning the trade in the world via ships where previously the area left ships stranded. Confused and isolated citizens were more than happy to ally themselves with Nidri for aid on the promise that their military may be at Nidri's beck and call.

Demographics

Dominant Race: Ocea
Common Races: Erel, Half Elves, Animalians, Omoks, Humans and Swivets
Other Races: Coastal Giants, Drak, Water Lysa and Dhargen
Absent Races: Fire Lysa, Stygvens and Doka
Beasts: Horses and beasts of burden that wander through the ground layer.

Government

Confederacy

Each individual city or town within the confederacy governs itself, but all contribute to a league or federation that promotes (at least in theory) the common good of all member states. Conditions and attitudes toward the central government vary from place to place within the confederacy. Nidri is in a confederacy rule with Lashell, each have representatives called Consuls that act sort of like ambassadors.

Ruling Chain

1. Commodore: "A naval rank above captain and below rear admiral, generally given temporarily to an officer commanding a squadron or division of a fleet."
In Nidri, it is the ruling title, where once it was Sovereign or Admiral, they agreed to drop it in rank as a sign of good faith with their partner in confederacy with Lashell. However, it is a title often passed down by blood like in a monarchy. Even when it may stray to someone more worthy, it often finds itself back in the hands of the Nidri family.
Current: Maklin Nidri, an Ocea x Dhargen

2. Consul: The official appointed by Lashell to live and protect the interests and citizens of the confederacy and to monitor the actions of Nidri to report to Lashell. Similar to an ambassador.
Current: Sessalees Yerta, a female Erel

Magistrate: A officer member who - alongside the Consul - administers the law. Specifically, one who conducts a court that deals with minor offenses and holds preliminary hearings for more serious ones. After which the Consul or Commodore is called upon.
Current: Destan Kase, an Ocea man

3. Dock Masters: The equivalent of next in command of others in military terms. These three oversee all the captains actions and direct the movements of their ships.

4. Captains: Those that run the ships and their respective crew. Each will report to a Dockmaster

6. Crewmen: Being a member of a crew is an honour and a responsibility. To shame yourself is to shame your captain in the face of the city. It gives you power equivalent to military guards without the training however the city relies on a strong honour system. To lose yours is to face the wrath of all others that maintain it.

Defences

  • Semi-honour/pride system, when someone steps out of line a member of a ship will step in on a sense of duty. Usually, a Dockmaster's own 'crew' as they are usually grounded in the city for this reason (although all are trained for manning a ship when needed)
  • If someone of ranking (not a citizen) such as a member of a crew or higher, steps out of line then there isn't just justified punishment but shame and often removal from the crew. A huge dishonour that all that sail the seas and skies will quickly be notified. This city runs on political honour and shame.
  • Water can be flushed down from the top of The Gyre to 'flush' out enemies storming up from the bottom

Industry & Trade

Level: High
Common out trade: Shells and coral, tropical fish, live fish for fresh consumption and preserved fish.
Common in trade: Red meats, clothes, spices, wool and leather, vegetables and fruits
Source of food: Fishing, shore farms and trade
Source of water: Their lake of location is purified of salt naturally, and especially magically around The Gyre
Known ships:
- The Silver Lining

Infrastructure

  • Lots of bottle trees
  • All colours of day lilies and pink Pixy flower plants everywhere
  • Brass accents

The Gyre

  • The main 'structure' that looks like a giant spring in a pond from a distance, this is known as The Gyre: a swirling current of water miles wide, not frozen in space but frozen in time. This is where a majority of buildings are built upon it's cool almost glassy like surface
  • About 1/2 mile / 1 km across in diameter. The center drop grab is about 1/3 miles across.
  • Meaning the walkways are also about 1/3 miles or 3 city blocks wide
  • There is roughly 15 stories of height between each layer
  • Artificial layers built in between along wood walkways. The higher up you go, the fewer of these residential walkways there are.
  • The lower down in zones you go, the less sunlight can trail through, what light does make it through is a blueish-green tint
  • Buildings of yellow-tinted wood and blue-tiled roofing or grass
  • Stepped wood walkways may line main roads to ease access of tourists who find the Gyre's surface slippery.
  • There is a straight drop down the middle of the coil that's used to drop packages with floats

Districts

Deities & Worship

General view: Expected, after all you stand upon a gift from a goddess
Common deities: Oceida goddess of oceans city
Restrictions:

  • Zalos god of skies, as Oceida's ex-husband its best not to even mention him

Implementations: Temples to Oceida on each layer. Temples to other gods can be found on the Midnight Layer and lower
Reliance: High, but only directly related to Oceida

Layer Hierarchy of The Gyre

The Gyre is an enormous slow spirally trail of water frozen in time by the goddess Oceida

The Sunlight Layer
- Exposed to the sun, the buildings here can tower and spread out as they'd like for this is only for the rich and power to afford.

- The more well off area to live in, most establishments catering to tourists are found here and as you spiral down the more common folk are found

The Abyss Layer
The poorest live here, if only for its difficulty to get sunlight

The Farm Crescent
A literal crescent of farming lands around the outside of the lake
