Rail Tunnel under Torn Lofte

This is a large, well-made tunnel passing under the patch of Torn Lofte. At this point, it's unknown how far it goes, as there are several cave-ins along it's known length, but it's at least several miles of clear, level, but very dark tunnel with a pair of wide rail tracks running parallel along its length. Those from a more technologically advanced background would recognize this as a rail tunnel, and even those who aren't will probably recognize rails, although they'll think of mining carts first.   There's an entrance about 30' up the side of the resulting cliff along the seam of Torn Lofte and Scrimpt in the valley now known as Simone's Escarpment. There's an investigation underway of the tunnel's properties, resources, and dangers, with a particular interest in using it as a way to bypass the difficult terrain of Torn Lofte.

Geography

The smooth black stone walls of the well constructed tunnel curve up overhead in a shallow arc, leaving a space just over a hundred feet across and around forty feet high in the middle. At either side of the tunnel, are ten foot wide platforms of smooth gray stone, usually very even, although they've been damaged along their length. Between the platforms, the floor is a wide expanse of iron with a diamond plate pattern. On this are two rails, parallel to the tunnel walls.   The rails are of dark blue stone and have a distinctly greasy feel to them, although they otherwise seem dry. They seem to be built from segments strung together like a series of books of the exact same size on a very long shelf. Evenly spaced in the middle of the top of the rails are softly glowing bluish crystals. Some of these are burned out and no longer glow, but the rest give off a faint light, improving visibility within a few feet. Those walking on the rails find them to be slippery.

History

The tunnel is under Torn Lofte and presumably appeared when that patch was inserted into the landscape sometime in late 281 PS. The tunnel itself was discovered several weeks later when a lone adventurer named Simone was exploring along the seam looking for an alternative to the harsh frozen landscape and high mountains of Torn Lofte.   The history of the tunnel before it arrived on Patchwork is still under investigation and may never be fully known, but initial evidence suggests that it was used as rail transportation line for both cargo and passengers.
