Crown of the Kobold King, Part 4
General Summary
Entering into the dreaded Crucible, the haunted monastery soon lived up to its name. Garth immediately punctured his foot on a kobold spike trap and was forced to stay behind, guarding the staircase. In the Basement Level, a welcoming party of kobolds and their slaves were soon dispatched, but one of the slaves survived and swore his undying loyalty to the "pink-skins" and promised to lead them to the Kobold King, Merlokrep. Avoiding the barracks full of stirge, they instead encountered the "ghost" of the mighty local hero, Glintaxe, whose shining ethereal axe and armor were disturbed and headed straignt for the party, cutting off their only way forward. They quickly discovered their folly, however, as the armor seemed to be all that remained of the hero trapped within a gelatinous cube. Arrow, sword, and song soon fell the mindless ooze, and the party marched north down the hall to the sounds of battle.
Ahead, the mess hall was filled with fighting kobolds trying to recapture escaping children as well as Edgrin, the last remaining member of a party of adventurers known as the Gray Eagles. While the party was able to quickly kill and loot their enemies, Richter expressed some concerns about the children remaining with them. Kimi (and Mikra, too!) would have none of it, however, and demanded to accompany the party in the rescue of their friends. The party reluctantly agreed, on the condition that they stay behind the party. Edgrin agreed to help, too, though the bard was out of spells for the day. Ahead, Gwen's as-of-yet-unnamed dogs detected the scent of both Jurin's shoes and Savram's blanket, so the now much-enlarged party ventured onward.
The next chamber was a butcher shop, but the meat was kobolds, and the butchers were ancient dwarf ghouls, who waited patiently on either side of the doors while Richter beat them down. Nearly losing both dogs to their ferocious yet intelligent attacks, the party eventually overpowered their enemies and the pups survived. Inside, they found a wand the ghouls had been using to regrow their victims' limbs for supper, and used its last remaining charge to heal Garth's foot and he returned to the party.
