Starchart

Why would I dwell on the past when I can see the future?

Divinator Current Flows Deep Beneath the Surface, 6th Ocean Collective (a.k.a. Starchart)

Sailors are a superstitious bunch. Starchart uses those superstitions and their divination to embolden their crewmates.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Being a sailor means having an active daily routine. This keeps them in pretty good shape. Thin, nimble, and strong enough, they would surprise most. A mage is never expected to throw a punch with much force, but this wizard has had their fare share of tavern brawls.

Body Features

Their four arms are an uncommon trait of Brightlings. As a wizard, they have learned how to do some relatively intricate things with all four hands at once. They are, however, second right hand dominant, first left hand subdominant.

Facial Features

The gem in their forehead was given to them at the Illuminos College of Magic. Their hair glows and flows elegantly, giving off a warm light.

Identifying Characteristics

Glowing skin and hair, four arms, gem in forehead, white eyes; Most likely in that order.

Special abilities

Dual Casting - a difficult procedure where a spell caster can cast two spells simultaneously. A check is made with disadvantage based on the casting creature's spell casting modifier. The chart below shows the DC for two and four arms creatures (2A and 4A). The DC is based on the spell level of the highest level spell being cast (e.g. magic missile and mage hand, DC is 12 for a two armed creature).
Spell Level 2A 4A
Cantrip 10 8
1st Level 12 10
2nd Level 14 12
3rd Level 16 14
4th Level 18 16
5th Level 20 18
6th Level 22 20
7th Level 24 22
8th Level 26 24
9th Level 28 26
On success or critical success, the spells work as normal. On failure, the higher level spell works and the lower spell fails, expending both spell slots (if both spells are not cantrips). On critical failure, the lower level spell works, the higher level spell fails, both spell slots are expended, and the caster takes a point of exhaustion. If both spells are of the same level: if one is "up cast" (e.g. a 1st level spell being cast with a 2nd level spell slot), then the up cast spell is considered the lowest. If both or neither are up cast, flip a coin to determine which is considered higher and lower. ((W.I.P., needs playtesting))

Specialized Equipment

Gem of Enhanced Concentration - It is given to students of the Illuminos College of Magic who have four arms to assist with the rare art of dual casting. It helps focus and channel their energy into casting two spells at once, once a day. It can also hold concentration of a spell for the endowed twice a day.    Glass Orb of Divination - spell casting foci especially crafted and enchanted to assist with casting divination spells.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Brightlings have a very structured society. Their social hierarchy is included in their name. Starchart was frequently disillusioned with the system. Living in the maritime district of the City of Lights, they grew up learning about sailing - specifically, navigation. The stars always fascinated them. They loved learning constellations and the movement of the night sky. An added benefit was that in order to be able to view the stars they had to be on a boat or ship away from the Slumbering Isles. This distance put them at ease, and the waves became comforting - even in rough seas.   After finishing public education, they had a chance to pick a specialty. A rare, though fascinating, choice, they chose to study magic, specializing in divination. The Illuminos College of Magic is a prestigious institution where they learned a lot. Upon graduating, with commendations, the final straw fell. Even with intense study and positive interactions with their communities, they were still in the 7th collective. Incensed, they left, with no notice.    They took a ferry to Ting Xa where they set out journeying across the island to Obor. Once they arrived at the port in southwest Obor they looked for a ship to take them somewhere, almost anywhere. They found the Golden Harpy. As they approached, it looked like a serious exchange between the captain and some Obori navy officials. A deal was being struck to allow defectors to stay in Obor and potentially be used to bargain with if they wished to return home. Uninterested in more of the politics going on with this, one thing stood out: the ship will need more crew members.   They approached tge captain and requested to join. The first mate, Gorgon, was included and they began making their case. Without much hesitation, they agreed and they were brought aboard. It wasn't long before the nickname was given to them by Gorgon. They loved the association and asked to only be referred to as Starchart.  The rest agreed (a bonus since they had trouble remembering their name).

Gender Identity

While brightlings are non-gendered, Starchart has enjoyed being associated with women and has accepted feminine identification as well as gender neutrality.
