An Essay by Honorable Lucian Vale Blackwood Vex, Aka The Lesser of Two Evils.
Despite many mortals believing that angels and celestials being holy beings that always work on behalf of the mortals, it is very much not always the case. As per devils and The Fae, celestials almost always have ulterior motives when they interfere in the affairs of mortals. However, unlike that of what you often see in Devil and Fae contracts, the negative effects of an angelic contract do not make themselves known until a much later time. Furthermore, while one may believe that just as dealing with a devil will likely damn you souls to the hells, dealing with angels will promise your soul to salvation. This is simply not the case.
If you have come into possession of this report, then it is very much possible you have been considering dealing with an angelic being. If this is the case, I recommend for you to read through this before making any further decisions. In most situations when a contract has been forged with an angelic being, there is near no way for one to escape it should they realize it was not what they believed it to be. Despite their pure being, angels and celestials are willing to deceive the mortals they deal with if they believe it will benefit the future, even if it comes at the expense of your well being.
Understanding the intentions of the contract will allow you to make a more informed decision on how to proceed. This document has been delivered to you to explain the intricacies on how angelic and celestial contracts work, how they are written, their purposes, and how to sign them. Please keep in mind that this is only to help you make a more informed decision, rather than dissuade you from making the deal, as I understand some mortals may be willing to make sacrifices for the greater good.
Purpose of an Angelic Contract
When a Celestial wants to forge a contract, the purpose of that Contract is purely for the benefit of an Angel who wants something, rather than the mortal who is signing. Often celestial beings are willing to act on good intentions for the sake of being good without the requirement of a contract, while the ones who wish for a contract are the ones you have to be more careful of. Not all celestials are pure beings, especially the ones that tend to directly oppose the forces of hell. To fight against such forces, rules need to be broken, and lines need to be crossed.
This is where the contracts come into play. While most Celestials are unwilling to cross those lines or break these rules, contracting mortals to go break these taboos in exchange for something the celestial views as trivial is acceptable. Many of these contracts will lead the signer to commit morally grey actions on behalf of their patron, and in worse situations outright evil.
One famous example of this happening is when the Celestial Kimballa versus an adventuring group known as The Seekers of the Blue. Kimballa had known of a group of necromancers within the town of Breezefall who had been exhuming graves. Necromancy is in most jurisdictions is dark magic, and is widely considered evil. As such, Kimballa had contracted The Seekers of the Blue to remove the threat of the cult in exchange for information regarding a demon who had been causing chaos across the world.
When the adventurers sought to remove the cult however, they discovered that the necromancers in question were a village of struggling farmers. The dead they were rising in life had granted their permission to raise the bodies to work in the fields to help the village survive, and the lich in charge of the land was a former war hero that had sacrificed his being to be able to be able to continue protecting the land, again with willing sacrifice of the lives of innocents who were already terminally sick or dying to make him into his current form.
During their investigations, the adventurers saw that while the situation was morally grey, there was no real wrongdoing or the intention to do so. As such they concluded they would leave the village as is.
Kimballa did not see it from their point of view. Because the adventurers had not removed what Kimballa the, in the terms of the contract the adventurers had broken it. Kimballa brought their wrath upon the adventurers, severely hampering their attempts to overthrow the looming demonic threat. This had eventually led to the death of Kimballa, but not without great effort of the adventurers
In many situations, the purpose of a contract for a celestial force mortals to act in evil or morally grey situations. In many cases they put mortals in worse situations than they are already in, challenging what they stand for and their very morals. In short, they can even be worse than devil contracts due to their deceptive being from a holy being.
How Are Contracts Structured
Angelic Contracts are often extremely short and to the point with very little fluff. You can expect between one or two pages when you are presented with a celestial contract, with simple words that the reader will be able to understand. An example of what a contract may look like is as follows.
I, Kimballa of the Holy Mace, will provide information on Azzaband of The Destructive Gaze to the adventurer party of the Seeker’s of the Blue. This information will consist of the location of the gatekey that can be used to seal Azzaband away.
In exchange for this information, The Seekers of the Blue, which is composed of Cassidy Macree, Got, Ollag Mudbelly, and Advisor Monogolo have agreed that they will remove the threat of the Necromantic Cult situated in the Town of Breezefall.
The terms of this contract must be completed within the time frame of three weeks. If after three weeks either party has not fulfilled the obligations of this contract, the other party may pursue actions to seek compensation to the amount of double the perceived value of the original obligations.
Above is the contract that Kimballa had written for the Seekers of the Blue. Unlike contracts written by Fae and Devils, Angelic Contracts are easy to understand. This is because unlike the former, Celestial Contracts are formed with the understanding of their intentions, rather than how they can be interpreted.
For example, despite the Seekers of the Blue determining that the necromancers of Breezefall were not a threat to the world, it was still the intention of the contract that they would deal with the necromancers in one way or another. Both parties were expecting to need to kill or otherwise remove the necromancers, but as no necromancers were slain, the contract was not fulfilled. As such, after three weeks had passed, Kimballa sought to take compensation, which they determined to be the two gate keys that the Seekers of the Blue had already collected.
How to Sign a Contract
With Angelic and Celestial beings, they tend to be more understanding and willing to accomodate mortals who are signing their contracts. As such, precautions can be made before signing such contracts and trapping you in situations similar to that of the Seekers of the Blue.
The first and most ideal situation as always is writing your own contract. Unlike those of the Fae or Devils, celestials are often appreciative of mortals presenting their own contracts as it reduces their workload. Of course, such contracts need to be beneficial to both sides, but mortals who write their own contracts can ensure that the terms are much more equal. They can also lengthen the terms as well to be able to cover some niche situations that may arise. Celestials are understanding of unusual clauses with contracts presented to them if mortals are able to explain why such clauses are written in. In situations where you are illiterate and unable to forge your own contract, having a third, neutral party write the contract out is also acceptable.
Another option is to negotiate. It may surprise you, but in times when an angel wants to forge a contract with you, they will often need you more than you need them. If their morals keep them from acting on something they view as evil, they will likely be willing to bend a knee to any concessions you add to the contract. Just because you want one thing, doesn’t mean you can’t get more. Just don’t become too greedy or the celestial may leave to find another mortal to deal with.
Finally, if you are uncertain on some things, simply asking questions will likely answer them. Angels will not often actively deceive mortals as their contracts rely on the intention of it. If a mortal does not understand what the terms in the contract actually means, it threatens the integrity of the contract.
However, sometimes ignorance is bliss. While asking questions can help you understand the contract, in situations asking too many questions can lead you being put in a disadvantageous position.
How to Escape a Contract
As explained, the integrity of the contract solely depends on both sides understanding why the contract is being forged. It may be short, but it is because less words makes it easy to see the intention of it. It is this integrity that forms the basis on how to escape an angelic contract.
It is actually an extremely easy concept. If you can prove you did not fully understand what you were agreeing to, you will be able to break out of the contract. The difficulty proving this however is that unlike the Fae or Devil who rely on just the contract and the words on the document itself as their contracts are woven into the signers being, celestials tend to use magic to prove their case.
There is very little way of getting around this. Celestials have ways to prove if one is lying or not. Furthermore, trying to deceive celestials with magic often tends to go poorly for them.
As such, the next way is to convince the celestial to severe the contract themselves. This method tends to be the easiest way to escape unfavorable contracts, especially for ordinary people. On occasions, a celestial may overestimate the capabilities of a mortal, asking them to accomplish tasks that are not in their skill set. Celestials can often be convinced of such circumstances and allow mortals to walk free.
Likewise, a celestial contract can also be renegotiated if the terms and understanding of the original contract changes based on new information obtained. This is something that The Seekers of the Blue could have attempted, but instead of doing that, they choose to try to ignore the contract which led to the problems that they encountered.
It is important to remember Celestials are often more understanding than most other outer beings, and are willing to bend the terms of the contract to better suit the situation so that both sides get favorable results.
But at times, celestials do take advantage of the näivety of mortals, trapping them in contracts that can sometimes be even more diabolical than a Devil’s Contract. In these situations, that’s where me and my firm come into play.
