An Essay by Honorable Lucian Vale Blackwood Vex, Aka The Lesser of Two Evils.
Rule one with dealing with the fae is to not deal with the Fae at all. As someone who often works with Fae Beings and their contracts, I can safely say that Fae as a whole are troublesome beings, taking words at face value in their simplest impressions. As such, in my humble opinion the easiest way to deal with such creatures is to not deal with them at all.
However, as with all things life is simply not that simple. Fae beings have a way to show up in the most inopportune times, creating chaos and confusion wherever they tread. Deals and contracts are often accidently stumbled into without the knowledge of the mortal involved, leading to, for lack of a better term, craziness.
This document has been written to spread information on the dangers of dealing with the Fae, and how to navigate interactions to not accidentally fall into their pratfalls.
How Fae Deals Work?
We have all heard the stories before. A fae being walks up to you and asks you for your name. You tell them your name, and all of a sudden it feels as though a massive weight falls upon your shoulders. You feel drained, your movements are sluggish, and you just feel no motivation. Congratulations, this feeling is a result of you having given your identity to a Fae Being.
The Fae deal in the literal interpretations of the words they speak. When they ask for your name, they are literally asking for you to give them your identity. Furthermore, unlike when you deal with Devils or Angels, much of the time Fae Deals are verbal agreements, and simply agreeing to the terms casually can bind you to them. It is the reason why many consider even speaking to The Fae can be considered extremely dangerous.
In times when the Fae require something from the Mortals they interact with, this is when the Fae offers contracts, similar to those of contracts devils and angels forge. Much of the time these contracts have you acting on behalf of a Fae Lord or Lady to further their influence within the Mortal Realm.
These contracts are often extremely long, spanning for upwards of 100s of pages. The reason why is due to the Fae’s Literal Interpretation Of the Contracts. Each contract needs to be meticulously crafted to ensure it protects the Fae issuing the contract.
Why do the Fae Make Deals?
Fae makes the Verbal Agreements for the simple purpose of causing chaos. Despite popular belief that Names and Identities Fae stealing from mortals granting them increased power and influence, no tangible evidence has ever been witnessed to prove this to be true. Furthermore, body parts like hands and eyes collected from unsuspecting mortals are kept as trophies, rather than intricate or complicated rituals.
These agreements are simply to sow chaos, with no ulterior motives.
A similar case can be said for actual contracts. When a Fae requires the assistance of mortals, it is often for the purpose of furthering their influence on the Mortal Realms. The contract serves as an understanding that the Mortals will provide a task to the Fae in exchange for something, oftentimes treasures, standing within their court, or favors to call on.
Fae contracts tend to be extremely long and burdensome to read. The reason for the length of such contracts however is for the express purpose of protecting the Fae. You see, as the Fae deals in the Literal interpretations of words, things have to be spelled out in the contracts to be stated as forbidden. These terms can range from “You shall not betray me.” “You will bring the object I want to this location.” “You will not break the object.” etc. Much of the case, the terms dictated in these contracts are basic, common sense things for any ordinary mortal taking a job request off a Tavern Board.
The most important thing to remember about these contracts is that unlike that of Devil or Celestial Contracts, Fae Contracts are non-corrupting and often short term. The Fae do not have any real purpose to damn souls to the hells or redeem them to the heavens. They rely on their own wits and cunning to accomplish their goals. As such, you often do not have to worry of any long lasting consequences if you happen to sign a Fae contract.
How to Sign a Fae Contract
As Fae Contracts tend to be less dangerous than Devil or Celestial contracts, very few considerations have to be taken when dealing with them. The only recommendation I have is to have a third party read over the terms of the contract before signing anything. While it is true that most Fae Contract do not leave lasting consequences, they have been known to sneak unreasonable terms into them. I.E. “You will give me your eternal soul”, right between the sections of “You will not poison me.” And “You will not steal my name.
Otherwise, the only other recommendation I have for you is to be extremely careful with your words so as to not fall for one of their word games.
A Fae Stole my Name, What Can I Do?
Losing your name to a Fae is like losing your identity. Things become extremely difficult for you as you find friends, family and loved ones are no longer able to recognize you. You may find yourself isolated and alone, and no one will believe your story. This situation is often difficult to comprehend for a mortal.
If this were to happen to you, the first thing to remember is to not panic. Even without your identity, people will still recognize you as a person, but sounding like a crazy person begging for help will not help your situation. It may be surprising, but mortals who specialize in adventuring tend to accept the explanation that your identity was stolen by a Fae if you are calm about it.
Due to this, you can oftentimes hire a mercenary group to take your name back. I would strongly recommend not attempting this yourself, adventurers are often specifically equipped to handle such beings, being more knowledgeable than you are in these types of matters. Being willing to accept you are not capable of taking on a Fae in a battle of wits is a difficult task, but it is something you have to accept.
And that is what dealing with the Fae always comes down to in the end: A battle of wits. Violence will not get your name back, one has to convince the Fae to return it. Due to their literal interpretations of words, one may be able to take something of importance from the Fae, or better yet, bestow something upon them like a new identity.
Unfortunately, Fae are not known to just take one's name. They can be known to take one's talents, their voice, body parts, and more. What does one do in these cases?
