The Lesser Evil Firm
A Law Firm that operates across the Multiverse, The Lesser Evil Firm serves to act on behalf of mortals to help them escape from unfair contracts and deals from outer beings.
Structure
The Lesser Evil Law Firm has three ranks that associates can hold after Lucian himself, simply titled to as “The Overseer” when referred to as rank.
The highest rank is that of Partner, named for essentially being “A Partner In Crime”. Partners are to the ones who work closest to Lucian, his inner circle who he trusts to fulfill delicate work such as subterfuge. Partners are often weaker devils that show great potential, with Lucian calling in favors from mortals who owe him to better train them in advanced mortal tactics. Lucian trusts Partners to be able to complete difficult contracts, allowing them to take the full compensation.
Associates are those who primarily meet with potential clients to hear their plights, along with handling smaller cases. They are also often tasked with researching and discovery, assisting Lucian and the rest of the Partners in obtaining information on clients and the beings they dealt with. Associates are known to even take on mortal affairs pro bono to advance their public appearance and get experience in dealing with foreign policies and understanding. They are compensated based on their contribution to a contract.
Finally researchers are the ones Lucian trusts to find and discover potential clients. They are spread across the multiverse, delivering Lucian’s report, “Dealing in Interpretations” to those they find corrupted by the touch of a devil. Associates are often small devils, such as imps who are able to hide and infiltrate locations without notice. They are given commission based on the number of people who Contact The Lesser Evil Firm, and tend to be good judges of mortals.
Culture
Those within The Lesser Evil are instructed to always speak in truths, being honest with potential clients without being misleading. The Firm relies on its good relations with mortals to continue its operation, and a single lie from any of its associates has the potential to lose the trust it worked hard to earn. Being made up primarily of devils means there is a natural aura of mistrust revolving around their firm, so public relations and protecting the client is extremely important for those working there.
Public Agenda
The Lesser Evil wears its goal on its sleeve, expressing and explaining its purpose to all clients who seek their services.
The firm offers the service to those trapped in Devil Contracts a chance at freedom at only a fraction of the cost the client paid. They do this by taking advantage of contract phrasing, interpretations of the words, and sometimes proving the devil had not fulfilled their obligations within the contract. They also deal in angelic and fae contracts and dealings as well, so long as they foresee it benefiting them in the long run.
They are also straight in explaining that they do not offer such services for the betterment of Mortals. In severing the contracts mortals form with devils, they interfere in the plans of potential rivals or enemies, without directly attacking or targeting them. The compensation they take, a portion of the clients souls, is siphoned into a personal object or possession of the clients, so it can be used as a source of power and influence for Lucian and the rest of the firm.
To the public, they know that The Lesser Evil are devils and only seeking to further their own goals. However, they also see that they do so in a way that will affect mortals the least, and even serve to help them.
History
As Lucian practiced working with mortals to severe rival contracts, he found that demands for his services kept drastically increasing way past his capability. Confiding one time with a client he expressed that calls for his services are far and wide, but he was only one devil who could only be in one place. As payment for his contract, the mortal shared his insight that with his understanding of Devil Contracts and law, mortals were likely not the only beings he could free from contracts.
With that realization, Lucian began to use his expertise scouting lesser devils, essentially headhunting the best dealers and negotiators that showed promise and recruiting them into his payroll. Potential hires were far in between, but as Lucian proved himself capable he attracted the attention of devils who sought to escape the confines of their own masters. In exchange, they pledged their loyalty to Lucian. The promise of power with minimum danger was appealing to many, and they joined with the budding lawyer with the intention to get a piece of the pie.
Eventually, those who worked for Lucian began joking that he was the Lesser of Two Evils. They were still that they were bound to him by contract, but at the same time appreciated that he didn't take his rage or disappointment out on them. In their current positions, Lucian gave them the opportunity to advance, something that their former masters didn’t allow.
Lucian liked the sound of “The Lesser of Two Evils”, and decided to name their group after the phrase. It fit, and was easy to remember.
Since then, Lucian and The Lesser Evil Firm has been a folk story across the multiverse. A devil who seeks redemption for his clients, and a force for good. The Lesser Evil Firm had established a home base upon the small plane of Pallet, a World where demons and angels both operate in relative peace among mortals. From here, the organization operates in relative safety due to the neutral status of the Plane. They began accepting Angelic and Fae Contracts after a while to comply with the neutrality of the world, allowing further operation upon the Pallet.
When faced with two evils, you know which one to choose.
