Magic in the Federation
During the Founding War, the full might of Elvish magic was brought to bear on the Ancellans, whose limited knowledge left them effectively helpless. Armies were drowned in arcane fire, and entire towns tore themselves apart as they were driven mad by whispers from the woods. It was only through attrition and technological advancement that allowed the Ancellans to win the war.In its aftermath, the Great Charter was founded by the federation’s greatest mage, Benedikt Vale. This Charter set limits on magic, separating the schools so that destructive magic like that witnessed during the war would never be used again. All Charter mages must graduate from Valewyrk, the only school of magic in the Federation. Those magic users who shirk the binds of the Charter, or are born with a sorcerous spark, must practice their gift in secret or be tracked down by Charter Wardens.
Demography and Population
The Federation began with the human nation of Ancellus, but as they expanded to control the entire Sigil peninsula, dwarves, halflings, tieflings, and wood elves have found their home amongst allies, or conquerors.
One race unique to the country is the Dragonborn. Prideful and hardworking, the Dragonborn place great importance in their heritage and their vocations, given when they come of age. Once given, a vocation becomes a dragonborn’s purpose and even their identity as their surname matches their vocation.
