Childhood
Hexan was taken from his family at the age of 4 after having been found by the Council of Advancement and Awareness as a magic using prodigy. He was taken to a remote island in the Sacred River that houses the Council’s elites school for wizards know as The Citadel of Knowledge; here he would spend his formative years honing his skills and knowledge to a razors edge.
Around the school Hexan was known as a good student, maybe sometimes to curious for his own good but never someone who needed to be overly watched. Being one of three Dragonborn he was quick to make friends with those outside of his race, his best friend being a half elf named Doran Fenwick. The two would often sneak into the forbidden section of the library together researching new ideas until very late into the night, along with their other friends Cassius, Dwali, and Bram. On one such night while the others were in a different section of the library Hexan’s curiosity on summoning got the best of him. Pulling out a book and scroll on the act of summoning a divine creature; after a few moments of strict concentration a Deva appeared before him. Considered a warrior and messenger to the gods the 8’ tall, silver skinned being, with shining pupils eyes and grand wings looked down upon the mortal who called them to the mortal plane. He pointed his large golden mace at Hexan, questioning which of the gods Hexan wished to speak with. When it became clear that the young wizard had done this not out of piety but curiosity the Deva became angered and cursed Hexan until he repented for what he had done. Ever since that night Hexan could feel the anger of the gods and goddess, to the point that when seeking healing from the schools cleric the spell would not work to it’s full potency.
During these years Hexan still wondered to himself about the world outside of the magically hidden island he called home. Everything he could possibly need was always available for him, the only thing he ever had to worry about was his pursuit of knowledge. All the while the small rumors about the school made him question what his actual purpose was here.
Some believed that their Headmaster Hadrian de Mowbray was making sacrifices in order to stay alive and not age, others spoke of new students being dragged in against their will screaming out for their families. To Hexan on most days these rumors meant nothing to him, but on the days that doubt creeped in and dreams of being dragged away from a family he did not remember while they called out a name he did not recognize; Hexan had to wonder if some of the rumors were true. Durring the day Hexan enjoyed his classes, trying his best to beat his rival a gnome by the name of Alston , and take the schools most annoying student a high elf by the name of Theren. On one such evening on the night before a month long school sanctioned break Hexan sat with his friends discussing their plans for the month, Doran planned to further his understanding of transmutation, Dwali had an experiment planned, Bram wished to take a break from all the hard work, and Cassius still had no idea what he wanted to do. Hexan on the other hand had decided he needed to make his way to the forbidden section to discover more about lighting and the elemental plane of existence. Just as Cassius was about to offer his help a loud slap was heard across Hexan’s back. The blue scales on his back bristled beneath his school robes, and looking up he saw his classmate and least favorite person the high elf known as Theren Liadon. A smug prick who seemed to want nothing more then to make Hexan’s life a living hell. As he continued walking past Hexan used a quick mage hand to trip up his nemesis, quickly knocking him to the ground and breaking his nose, it was clear to everyone in the dining hall that the two would quickly be escalating to a full blown fight any second. The master of evocation Igoc Wake an elderly halfling quickly mad his way to the boys to break up the fight and ensure that for the next few hours they stayed out of trouble.
With meals over and Hexan and his friends heading off in different directions, Cassius was finally able to inform his that he had overheard two instructors discussing the elemental plans and a few books on them in the forbidden section. Intrigued by this information Hexan told his friend head think on it and get back to him; knowing fully that the school had upped to security in the library to a stone golem which would make sneaking in much more difficult. A few weeks passed and Hexan hit a block in his research late one night, he knew that the only way to get further along would be to grab Cassius and make their way to the library. Leaving his room, Hexan quickly checked on his best friend Doran who seemed to be hard at work and not want to be bothered and made his way to Cassius’ room, where the boy quickly agreed to join him on that nights escapades.
In the library the two looked out for the gnomish librarian who had a sneaking suspicion that they had been breaking into the forbidden section thanks to the tip from Theren; but he still had yet to prove it. With Cassius keeping lookout Hexan made quick work of the locks and barriers and into the well kept secrets of the school. Making quick work to the section his friend described where he was met with many books that looked very similar with the only thing distinguishing being the the color on the spines showing which element they represented. Taking the better part of a half hour all while hearing the slow shuffling of the golem in the distance, Hexan finally found the book he was looking for. Pulling it out and placing a book with a similar spine in it’s place he made his way to the exit only to be found by the golem.
With the strong stone hand on his shoulder Hexan quickly made a plan, focusing his magical energy on the hand and using his inherit dragonborn strength he was able to get away while also distracting the the golem by tossing books in every direction. Once out of the forbidden section and re-locking it the two boys ran back to their rooms.
Adolescents
As Hexan got older he continued to put more and more effort into his studies, taking breaks every now and then to play around with the plants in the green house in the school. Either to test how electricity affects the plant life or to partake in one of the pipeweeds that the herbology master grows. After catching him breathing in the smoke the master warned Hexan about the dangers of the drug, but began to smoke with him every once and while.
By the time Hexan was 14 he and Alston had both reached level of study where they were far beyond their classmates and some of the upperclassmen. The only difference being that the young gnome had found the element that he could control whereas Hexan had not. Certain factors though did act as large distractors for the young man. A crush on the one and only female dragonborn at school provided something for his mind to wonder to late at night. Litrix the bronze dragonborn who was a year ahead of Hexan also held the lightning breath affinity and provide a common ground for the two to hold onto. Had certain things not happened Hexan may have asked her out, but instead his entire world came crashing down one afternoon.
For months rumors of Doran having taken up studying the necromantic arts had been spreading around the school. Hexan heard these but did his best to put them out of his mind. One morning after breakfast Doran approached his best friend telling him that all the rumors were false and that Hexan had nothing to worry about; he believed Doran’s words wholeheartedly. Having known him for almost 10 years and them being fast and fierce friends gave Hexan no pause whatsoever. Looking back on this moment he wished he had. A few days after they had their talk Hexan was on his way to the dining hall for dinner noting a commotion outside of it.
Getting closer and pushing his way to the front of the crowd Hexan’s heart dropped, Doran was in the midst of a magical fight with the headmaster and two armed guards. Tendrils of dark necromantic energy wrapped around his torso and arms, the face of a demon could be seen trying to pull itself out of Doran’s body. Before things could go further the Headmaster Mowbray and the two guards brought Doran down to his knees stabbing him through the heart with magic missiles and spears. A hush fell over the room while the onlookers realized the rumors about their classmate were true all along. Hexan could sense a few of his classmates staring at him whispering as to what he knew. He spent the next few days in meetings with the administration of the school discussing the situation and closing himself off to those around him.
The only thing that Hexan wanted now was to focus on his goals, hoping they could help the world. He looked forward to the day were he could leave the island shelter and see what the entirety of Ossin had to offer. He wished to bring knowledge to all, spreading the ideals that he had grown to know to be the most important thing in the world. Much like the country he was a citizen of that he had never been given the chance to explore knowledge was his religion and the Goddess Ioun The Giver of Insight had taken notice.
