Azrael Errancar

"The most powerful mage of the fifth age. Azrael Errancar is a figure steeped in such power, mythology, and nuance that entire volumes could be written about his deeds, and ambitions. I was once his contemperary during my days at the Circle of Nine. I knew him then as a friend, but we parted as terrible enemies. I sometimes wonder if my actions may have set him upon his terrible, and irrevocable course.
— Holland Morpheon

The War of the Broken Lance

Azrael Errancar is credited for breaking the Iskar Astartes during the events of the War of the Broken Lance during the Fifth Age. He annexed the entire region of Iskandar after destroying its capital of Arunsurlye. Reducing the white city into ash in one unfathomable strike. In the aftermath, the Magisterium captured the city of Sigil, and soon after, the city of Saeref.   The War of the Broken Lance began after Iskandar refused a treaty of peace proposed by Dalair, and its Magisterium as an effort to defeat the forces of Drin in the north who were driving their forces southward. The primary reason for Iskandar's refusal was the desire for their magically inclined citizens to be conscipted into the Eldar forces. Azrael retaliated after the peace treaty with a weapon known only as the "Mithrilblight Bombs" that reduced Arunsurlye into powder, killed it's king (Lord Aeramun), and annhilated the entire house of Galmirridion save for one knight whom had been drawn away from the fortress of Castiel on an imperative mission.   That same knight, Merreth Deccar, would go on to lay her sword upon the shoulder of the mighy Centurion warrior, Uviak Cragmaw, who would, nearly one-hundred years later, raise her broken house and lead the charge upon the battle of Saeref that would ultimately end in Azrael Errancar's death.

Early Years

Azrael had been a contemporary to the highly esteemed Sorcerer, Holland Morpheon, during their years together at the academy of the Circle of Nine. It was a well known fact that they were fast friends, and on the eve of Holland's graduation from the Circle, he unwittingly challenged his friend, Azrael, to a wizard's duel at the behest of a large, excited crowd. Holland was known as one of the most renowned arcane duelists of the fourth age. He was a prodigy. The grandson of Zorza Morpheon, who once competed to become High Sorceress of the Starwell of Dalair. In such duels, it is customary that the loser give up his spellbook.   Azrael failed to defeat his collegue, and the following day, when his own trials of High Sorcery took place in the Circle of Nine, he was physically scarred and wounded for life without these material components to aid him. It would take nearly another hundred years before he would recreate such a book and eventually pass his own trials. His hatred for Holland in those centuries grew into an inbittered fury that changed him forever.

Death

During the battle of Saeref, Azrael Errancar fought against the Centurions of the Fifth Age, and was felled by them. These were six of the greatest heroes that had ever lived, and nearly alone save for his familiar, Hubert, he still proved to be a formidable enemy.   There are rumors amongst the Iskar Astartes that the Centurions, the heroes of their age that barely defeated Errancar, only came to be due to a mysterious figure known as Shalidor, who is believed to have been a version of Azrael who succeeded in his war and lamented the world born of it. These rumors are part of a collective of stories published by the bard, Masiro, simply titled: "A Cradle of Light"
