Lucius Corvo Character in Orpheus Gaze | World Anvil

Lucius Corvo

Lieutenant-General Lucius Corvo was the first scion of House Corvo, a conservative political figure and a major military figure known for his service in the 2nd Zzenddi War.

Early Life

Lucius Corvo was born to a lower-middle class family in Milan, Earth. Lucius’s father Gaius was a civil servant and his mother Aurelia ran a small shop. Attending Athens College on a Republic Marine Corps Scholarship, Lucius graduated near top of his class in Engineering and Political Science.   Upon leaving Athens, Lucius then attended the Republic Marine Corps officer training camp. Nicknamed ‘The Greek’ by his marine academy classmates, Lucius was mocked for both his humble background and his alma mater, the cradle of liberal values on Earth. Lucius graduated third in his class as a second lieutenant in 2527, carrying his training battalion’s pennant.

Military Career

Armed Forces

Second Lieutenant Corvo was deployed to Nova Terra, serving as the platoon leader in an engineering company. His efficiency in the construction of military infrastructure and fortifications saw him promoted to First Lieutenant in 2528, less than a year after graduating. In addition to this, Lucius was named a Company Executive Officer, taking part in the policing of the 2530 elections on the planet. The following year saw Lucius transferred to a rifle regiment as a company commander for the campaign to liberate New Silesia from the Hassal League. Leading his marines from the front, Lucius was decorated and promoted to the rank of Captain. It’s said that he personally dragged out the Karkouri puppet governor from his office by the collar before turning him over to his superiors.   Following his success on New Silesia, Captain Corvo was swiftly deployed against the Hassal League once again, this time as a battalion commander on Vanheim. From 2531-2533 Lucius led his battalion in dozens of bloody battles against the Karkouri and their client races. Captain Corvo’s tactic of spotting enemy positions through excellent reconnaissance work, followed by brutal day-long artillery strikes earned his battalion the name ‘Te Kamaek’, which translates as ‘Malevolent Ghosts’ from Salborian.   However, his eagerness to lead from the front would eventually catch up with him, and Captain Corvo was wounded in hand-to-hand combat at Knifehand Port, an injury that would see him in recovery for three months. Whilst recuperating, Lucius threw himself into all other aspects of his rank, occasionally disobeying doctors orders to spend time with the men under his command. In 2533, Lucius saw action in Aesir City, and along with his battalion took part in the bloody battle of Saker 117. After a brutal assault, the Salborian held strongpoint was captured and Lucius was decorated again for his service.   After the war, Captain Corvo served for two years as a staff officer in the Regimental and Brigade Staff for the Marine Corps, and in early 2535 achieved the rank of Major. Throughout his two years away from the frontline, Lucius honed his craft as an effective administrator, developing a skill for swiftly deploying supplies and equipment.   In late 2535, Lucius tried out for and was granted a post in the Republic’s newly formed Special Forces Unit: The Tech Commando Regiment. Over the next thirteen years, Major Corvo and his company of Tech Commandos would act as pioneers for this emerging branch of the Marine Corps, with Lucius leading elite marines against separatist terrorists, pirates and smugglers.   In 2548 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel, took over as regimental commander of Tech-Com, and was assigned to counter-terrorism operations against the emergent terrorist group named Jericho. From 2548 to 2553, Colonel Corvo and Tech-Com would repeatedly engage with Jericho, preventing numerous terror attacks and capturing multiple enemy combatants. These operations would culminate in Colonel Corvo’s Tech-Com Regiment working alongside Republic Intelligence on Earth to carry out a series of highly successful assassinations against Jericho’s leadership.   In 2555, Lucius was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. He then transferred to the General Staff as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Marine Corps, serving also as a planning officer.

National Security Advisor

Following the 2560 presidential election, General Corvo served as National Security Advisor to the incoming Knottman administration. Upon assuming the role, Lucius made it his priority to help prepare the Republic for a prospective second Zzenddi invasion, having been warned of this by fellow officers amongst the outgoing government. To this end, Lucius oversaw the construction of several new Republic ships, as well as initiating Project Nightjar: a joint research project between the Republic and its CCN allies with the aim of developing anti-Zzendi craft.   During the confrontation between the Republic and the Ashenmark, Lucius began to reach out to Margrave Ashpool in an attempt to broker a solution, believing his position as a neutral third party could remove some of the heat from the situation. These discussion between the General and the Margrave would be the beginnings of a friendship, and eventually see Lucius joining Valiant upon retiring from active duty.   In the build up to the Zzendi invasion, Lucius repeatedly found himself at odds with others in cabinet. General Corvo was an exponent of the military and was somewhat more "Hawkish" than the Knottman administration.   Despite not seeing eye to eye with his cabinet colleagues, Lucius oversaw a number of military operations and for his work was promoted to the rank of Major General in 2565.   Eventually however, his position as Security Advisor in the Harmony Meagher administration would prove untenable, and craving combat command General Corvo resigned his post and relocated back to Milan awaiting reassignment.   An opportunity for action arose close to home, when Jericho orchestrated an attack on the capitol building in Dhaka. Lucius rushed to the scene, assumed command of his old unit and oversaw the clearance of the capitol, personally eliminating a number of Jericho insurgents.

The 2nd Zzenddi War

Once order had been restored in Dhaka, Major General Corvo was assigned to take command of Republic forces on Al Ahily in preparation for the coming Zzendi invasion. Working closely alongside War Secretary Elethuria Ashpool, Lucius coordinated the defence of the planet.   A combination of Ashpool battle droids augmented with Nightjar Technology, Al Ahily tribal natives, and surprise attacks would help inflict heavy losses on the Zzendi invasion force, stalling their fleets advance and buying time for the Republics Navy to gather in Sol System.   General Corvo was on Al Ahily during the initial stages of the Zzenddi war and he was withdrawn, along with his staff, after the first contact with the Zzenddi. Despite being seriously wounded by a Zzendi war-form during the evacuation attempt, he was treated by Eden Bio-Technica and made a full recovery, and to coincide with his retirement from active duty he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.   He retired from active duty at the rank of Lieutenant General with the intent to run for Governor of Earth in 2580.

Political Career

Formally entering politics, General Corvo joined the Ashpool led Valiant and announced his candidacy for Governor of Earth in the 2580 election. Despite his brief tenure as a political figure, Lucius was able to form the Forza Terra political faction within Valiant.   He made numerous campaign speeches setting out the Forza Terra platform: Pragmatic economic policy combined with a muscular hawkish centralised state. His views on the size of the state, as well as the influence of the Hansa, put Lucius at odds with many of the more free-market elements within Valiant.   At the climax of the second Zzenddi war, General Corvo elected to stay behind and help defend the planet he loved.   Lucius Corvo was wounded during the attack on Earth and never recovered. He passed away in 2580 after a short illness. His son Tiberus Corvo took over his campaign and eventually won the governorship of Earth in 2580, partly thanks to the respect his father has earned throughout the Republic.
