The Steam Engine

A Glacial Revolution

"In the ice, we found strength. In the steam, we found life."
— Eryndis Kipps, inventor of the first steam engine
When the worlds were shattered after the Great Separation, Vélactris, Cryos's kingdom, became a land of eternal ice and cold. Its inhabitants were confronted with a slow extinction. The harsh climate forced them to take refuge underground, but it was the creation of the steam engine by Eryndis Kipps that transformed their fate and allowed the birth of a unique and flourishing civilization.

Origin of the Steam Engine

For decades, the people of Vélactris relied on coal and hot water to meet their vital needs. However, the growing population and lack of suitable resources demanded a more efficient solution. It was in this context that Eryndis Kipps, a visionary inventor and the daughter of a dwarven miner, decided to explore the idea of converting steam into mechanical energy. Inspired by dwarven forges and observations of natural steam currents, she designed a system to amplify the power of steam to drive pistons.   In 572, after years of research and dangerous experimentation, Kipps presented the first functional steam engine. This rudimentary prototype quickly became the base model for more sophisticated machines, enabling not only the production of heat but also the movement of gears and pistons.

Operation and Principles

The steam engine of Vélactris is based on a system that is both simple and robust, designed to withstand the extreme conditions of this icy world.

Steam Production

Water, extracted from underground reservoirs heated by geothermal heat, is transformed into steam in a large boiler reinforced with mithril and black iron alloys. The black coal mined from mountain mines serves as the primary fuel.

Energy Transformation and Regulation

Pressurized steam drives massive pistons, which transfer their movement to gears connected to various mechanical devices. Valves and gauges regulate pressure, preventing explosions while maintaining a continuous flow of energy.

Impact on the Society of Vélactris

The invention of the steam engine transformed Vélactris irreversibly. Previously confined to rudimentary underground colonies, the inhabitants were able to build complex and interconnected cities, where steam was used to heat, power industries, and propel transportation systems.   Steam cities emerged, such as Frosthaven, where steam pipes crisscross the snowy streets, connecting factories, homes, and public spaces heated artificially. This transformation allowed the population to grow and avoid extinction in such an inhospitable environment.

Social Transformation

The steam engine revolutionized Vélactris society, encouraging rapid urbanization and increased social stratification. Guilds of blacksmiths and engineers gained considerable influence, becoming key players in both the economy and politics.

Cultural Impact

This technology also became a symbol of national pride, representing resilience and ingenuity in the face of adversity. Festivals and exhibitions are held to celebrate its advancements.

Major Applications

Survival Suits

Steam enabled the development of the first sealed suits, capable of withstanding the deadly temperatures of the surface. These suits, equipped with steam-heated reservoirs, prolong the survival of workers and explorers exposed to extreme cold.

The Great Fulgur-Rail

The Fulgur-Rail, a true mobile city powered by steam, connects the cities and underground colonies. This robust train, with powerful steam engines, crosses frozen tunnels and landscapes, transporting passengers and goods with unprecedented efficiency.

Heavy Industry

Foundries and factories, powered by steam engines, produce tools, weapons like the Steam Rifle, and complex machines.

Common Uses and Abuses

Common Uses

  • Urban Heating: Steam engines power heating networks in cities.
  • Industry: They drive tools in workshops and foundries, increasing productivity.
  • Transport: Steam-powered trams and trains connect cities and isolated colonies.

Abuses and Misuses

However, the technology is not without controversy. Unscrupulous industrialists exploit workers in dangerous conditions, pushing machines to their limits to maximize profits. Accidents due to boiler explosions are not rare, causing significant human losses. Furthermore, steam has been militarized to create destructive weapons, raising ethical concerns about its use.

Legacy and Symbolism

The steam engine represents much more than a simple technological innovation: it is a symbol of the resilience and determination of the people of Vélactris. It embodies their ability to transcend the limits imposed by their environment and to create a thriving society in adversity.   Although the technology has evolved since that first invention, gradually incorporating magical elements, Kipps' steam engine remains a key milestone in the history of Vélactris, a monument of iron and steam that continues to remind all of the power of human and dwarven ingenuity.

Access & Availability
The steam engine has become a widely adopted technology, but its production remains controlled by industrial guilds and consortiums led by influential families. Initially reserved for collective needs, such as heating homes and powering the first workshops, it has gradually expanded into military and industrial sectors.   However, the complexity of its manufacturing and the necessary resources (notably black coal and special alloys) limit its accessibility to the lower classes. Major cities like Frosthaven have vast steam-powered infrastructures, but rural and isolated areas often have to make do with rudimentary technologies.   Nevertheless, steam has become ubiquitous in daily life, through trams, heating reservoirs, and various mechanical devices.

I like how you dive into the societal impact and even ways that this technology can be abused. The technology itself is a nice blend of real-world science and fantastical materials.

This is a great article. I adore that it was discovered in an icy, frozen location. The variety of uses and applications is impressive, and I like how you included negative use of it. I'm simply wondering if there are any problems for the large generators of the steam engines in the ice terrain?
