Humans

Children of Aenor

"Humans are living paradoxes. Fragile yet resilient, their curiosity is both their greatest strength and their greatest weakness."
— Aravel Sylas, elven druid
Humans, creatures of Aenor, are among the first mortal races to have come into being. Endowed with great adaptability and unparalleled inventiveness, they quickly established themselves as a major force in the world of Andoris. However, their relentless quest for dominance, coupled with a distrust of magic and other races, has often made them agents of both conflict and progress.

Origin and Creation

Humans were the first beings created by Aenor, their unique gift being free will. Designed to survive the cycles of destruction caused by Nyssara, they were endowed with exceptional adaptability, but also great fragility, reflecting their imperfect nature.   Their creation marked a turning point in the cosmic conflict, as they embodied the hope of establishing balance not through the gods, but through mortal beings capable of restoring harmony on their own.

Physical Characteristics

Humans are creatures of great physical diversity, with varied skin tones, sizes, and strengths. Although generally less robust than dwarves or less graceful than elves, their physical adaptability allows them to thrive in nearly any environment.   They are known for their determination in the face of adversity, their ability to transform hostile environments into thriving homes, and their ability to develop technologies to overcome their natural weaknesses.

Genetic Diversity

Their exceptional genetic repertoire gives them natural resistance to diseases, a capacity for acclimatization to extreme climates and the flexibility to evolve according to their environment.

Life Expectancy

Although their lifespan is relatively short (barely a century in the best cases), this limitation pushes them to maximize their potential in a limited time.

Social Hierarchy

Human society is often divided into complex hierarchical systems, such as feudalism or monarchy. These systems reflect both their ambition and their propensity for internal conflict.

Feudalism

In many human kingdoms, feudal systems predominate. Local lords, often dependent on a monarch, rule over their lands in exchange for loyalty and military protection. These hierarchies are supported by an agricultural base made up of peasants and serfs.

Markets and Cities

With the emergence of commerce, many cities evolved into centers of exchange and innovation. These cities, although autonomous, often depend on surrounding kingdoms for protection and resources.

Religious Institutions

The influence of the The Order of the Pure Radiance marked the political and social evolution of humans from Andoris, consolidating a rigid vision of morality and fueling conflicts with non-human peoples. Religion often plays a central role in governance and external relations.

Art and Philosophy

Humans are prolific creators in the arts, music, and literature. They constantly explore their mortal condition through diverse philosophical reflections, oscillating between the desire for transcendence and the acceptance of their finitude.

Literature and Mythology

Human writings often explore existential themes, oscillating between the desire for transcendence and the acceptance of their finitude. The myths of their creation, particularly those related to Aenor and Nyssara, are central to their worldview.

Architecture and Engineering

Their buildings, while less elegant than those of the elves or less sturdy than those of the dwarves, reflect a combination of utility and aesthetics. Human cathedrals, often built to honor Aenor, are impressive monuments of ingenuity and dedication.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Adaptability : Humans can settle and thrive in extremely varied environments.
  • Ingenuity : Their inventions and innovative strategies often compensate for their physical limits.
  • Ambition : The driving force behind their progression, but also a source of conflict.

Weaknesses

  • Excessive Ambition : Their desire to conquer exposes them to repeated conflicts.
  • Mortality : Their relatively short lifespan limits their experience and long-term vision.
  • Internal Divisions : Their internal rivalries often weaken them in the face of external threats.

Role in the World

Humans are the engines of change. Their actions, whether destructive or creative, have a disproportionate impact on the balance of the world. They embody the potential and the peril of free will.

Conquerors and Explorers

Their incessant quest for territories and resources led them to establish flourishing but short-lived empires.

Innovators

Their ability to create and innovate has transformed the world, introducing new technologies and ideologies.

Agents of Discord

Their ambition and distrust of magic have often been the cause of major conflicts with other races, notably elves and theriants.
