Vélactris

The World of Ice

“In the icy breath of Vélactris, only the most determined hearts forge a future.”
— Popular proverb from the cities of frost
Vélactris, the world of eternal winter, is a ruthless world where ice reigns supreme. Dominated by endless frozen expanses, crystalline mountains, and ceaseless storms, this world embodies the resilience and adaptability of its inhabitants.

Geography and Environment

Vélactris is a frozen expanse composed of vast snow plains, frozen mountains, and seas of perpetual ice. The landscape is dominated by colossal glaciers that move slowly, continuously reshaping the land.

The Eternal Frost Plains

These endless plains are swept by glacial winds. Despite their hostility, they harbor valuable resources like energy crystals and creatures adapted to extreme cold.

The Mirror Peaks

A mountain range with shimmering walls that reflect light like mirrors. They are rich in rare minerals, but exploration is perilous due to frequent avalanches.

The Frozen Sea

A solidified stretch of water, cracked with deep fissures and crevices. Beneath its surface lie unique ecosystems and gigantic aquatic creatures, such as the Ice Leviathans.

Climate and Living Conditions

The climate of Vélactris is extreme, with temperatures regularly dipping below -50°C. Snowstorms are frequent and unpredictable, turning entire regions into labyrinths of ice. Inhabitants, whether human or other races, adapt to these conditions with magic-enhanced clothing and shelters heated by energy crystals.

Major Cities

Frosthaven : The Ice Capital

Frosthaven is the nerve center of Vélactris, a fortified city built on an icy plateau and surrounded by crystal mountains. Governed by the Steam Council, a scientific oligarchy, it stands out for its advanced technological research and elite military forces.

Heidheim : The Fortress of the North

Located in a frozen valley surrounded by imposing ramparts, Heidheim is a militarized city where discipline and strength are core values. Its minefields and elite armies make it an impregnable bastion.

Arkendelle : The Peaceful City

Nestled in the heart of the frozen forests, Arkendelle is a haven of peace and community harmony. Known for its winter gardens and ice sculptures, this pacifist city focuses on art and respect for nature.

Mirragel : The Mirror City

Mirragel, perched on the edge of the Mirror Glacier, is a mystical city where light and illusions reign supreme. Its crystal towers reflect light in such a way that the city is nearly invisible, providing a unique tactical advantage.

Technology and Magic

Survival in Vélactris depends on a unique combination of advanced technology and magic. The energy crystals, ubiquitous in the region, serve as a source of heat, power, and even propulsion for machines like the The Great Fulgur-Rail.
  • Heating Systems : Magical generators powered by ice crystals keep the cities habitable.
  • Weapons and Defenses : Steam and magic-based weapons, such as frost cannons.
  • Transportation : The Fulgur-Rail is the centerpiece, but steam sleds and tamed creatures also handle local travel.

Peoples of Vélactris

Humans

The majority of Vélactris' inhabitants, humans are the vanguard of ingenuity and survival in this frozen kingdom. They have organized themselves into fortified cities, using both technology and magic to thrive in this unforgiving environment.

Dwarves

The dwarves of Vélactris are a resilient people, flourishing in the icy depths of the mountains. Their underground cities, such as Dum’Krash, are masterpieces of engineering, illuminated by energy crystals they extract carefully. Dwarves live alongside humans, often as artisans or engineers, contributing to their prosperity while maintaining a certain degree of independence.

Elves

Once prosperous, the elves nearly vanished from Vélactris after the Great Separation. Unable to adapt to the harsh cold, most perished or abandoned their cities. The few remnants of their civilization lie in majestic ruins, buried beneath the snow.   A few individuals with elven blood survive, though they are very rare. They live among humans, often as artisans or scholars. A persistent legend speaks of a last pure-blooded elf living in seclusion in the remote mountains.

You've really made this place of ice feel versatile and complex. And the people living here sound like they worked hard to adapt to the harsh conditions! Love that you added so many cool places and towns and things. I'd love to see a map, or learn about a story or two that took place in this region! I have so many questions haha, like, how does magic-clothing look like? Great article, so many hooks. It really got my brain going filling in all the possibilities. I'd love to hear about it if you decide to add some more details or stories about this place!
