Tetoga Tradition / Ritual in Orcerta | World Anvil

Tetoga

In the Avian Culture‌ it is common for the whole community to participate in hunts, as such the role of a hunter is well respected.
‌ Once an Avian reached the age of 20 they are expected to be a somewhat decent hunter.
‌ This is evaluated by a hunting test once a year - the Tetoga - where all avians that reach the age of 20 this year compete with each other.
‌ Due to its significance it is a spectacle that will continue through the whole day.

Procedure

Start of the day

The whole settlement meets either at a designated building or the center.
Here everyone will either build up some tables and seatings, or sit beside each other on mats.
Subsequently, all will place whatever they brought in a designated area and proceed to have a breakfast together, talking about the upcoming test and its participants.
After the breakfast has finished and the conversations stopped, the Goki will call for every competitor and introduce them with a speech.

The Competition

After all competitors were introduced, they are asked to get ready for the test, meaning: readying their weapons and getting into hunting attire if they have any.
There are different ways of holding this competition, some settlements specifically breed different animals to be hunted and some just say to hunt for whatever seems reasonable.
Here they put a big emphasis on "reasonable" for they are hunters, but don't hunt in excess without finding use for their prey, so each participant is allowed to only hunt one animal.
Once the goal is set, the attendees are set out to hunt for whatever the test calls for.
Here it is common to assign points to certain animals - regardless of how the ceremony is held - to later tally up.
This hunting sesstion normally lasts until the sun starts to set.

The End

Before the competitors return, a similar arrangement as in the morning is created and many prepare some food at home or set up grilling stations.
Once the participants come back, they put up their prey for show and retreat to clean themselves, after this is done, they settle down with everyone else.
The Goki will then look at all hunted animals, assign points based on species and the method it was killed and will crown a winner of the competition.
Beside glory and bragging rights, there is nothing gained from making the first place in the competition, everyone who managed to hunt something will pass.
The day ends in a feast where all participants are celebrated and the animals that were hunted are grilled.

Special Occurance

There was one special occurance many avian settlements tend to talk about, where a young avian called Luxan managed to kill a Geminit - a two headed poison drooling monstrosity of an animal - alone and get it back to his village that was terrorised by it for weeks.
He won the competition without objection and - which is normally done for the Goki - got weapons and armor made from his extra ordinary prey.
