Regelsburg, Duchy of

This is the political state of Regelsburg.

Structure

Feudal stare, headed by the Duke.

History

Various entities have claimed or risen up around the city of Regelsburg (previously known as Vassalton) through the centuries. Kings and lords passed in and out of power there, and the land and city passed in and out of the control of other entities, such as Norland or Ritmark and others. In the 700s, Karl the Great established a kingdom in Vassalton, which he renamed as Regelsburg. The territory and its rulers remained from that point on, though they continued to pass in and out of control of the Kingdoms to the south. After the wars or unification in the Kingdom, Regelsburg lost its independence, though it continued to claim it - eventually, in the 1100s, it was made into a Duchy, under the nominal control of the Kings, though this control was mostly lost. Regelsburg from that point on was effectively independent, and became a powerful nation.   In 1593, Geoprge Blighton had Frederick III assassinated, and took the throne for himself, leading to a massive war in and out of the country. George died by 1596, but the war raged on, among claimants to the throne and outside forces, including invasions from the Kingdom, the north, the Sapphire hills dwarves, and others. This devastated Regelsburg, leaving it in a state of near anarchy, ruled by local barons and warlords. It destroyed much of the infrastructure, destroyed trade on the Greatflood river for a decade (leading to the growth of Bayport and other western seaports as a new conduit for goods from the north to the south), and left Regelsbirg at the mercy of its neighbors.

Demography and Population

The country is predominantly human, though there are large dwarven populations in the hills, and numerous halflings and elves scatterd through the hinterland. Humans are usually of Germanic stock, and in the hiunterlands, especially, usually speak German rather than common. There is some overlap in people with the Kingdom, who are often Anglo or Norman.

Military

This has always been a very militarized state, and remains so, though it is now completely decentralized. Feudal armies roam the wastes.

Religion

Strongly Universalist. Radical and militant factions of the church have taken on great influence since the troubles.

Foreign Relations

Currently, they are very weak, with ineffective central government and independent minded barons. They are thus at the mercy of outside forces, who compete for advantage. The Kingdom, the Sapphire dwarves, Ritmark and the northern cities, as well as many smaller lords and entities contend for advantage, supporting various factions within Regelsburg.

Agriculture & Industry

Large farmlands, growing wheat and many other grains and products. Also a strong cattle raising land. In the hills, there is extensive mining, and some timber harvesting. They are also a manufacturing power, especially along the river, in the cities, specializing in wrmor and weaponry and other metal working.

Trade & Transport

They have always been a trade power, being on the Greatflood and able to control traffic there, but the wars have cost them much of their control of this.

Education

University of Regelsburg is a powerful organization, but has been crippled by the wars.

Infrastructure

EXtensive, especially around the cities and river, though all of it has been severely damaged by the wars.
