Duchy of Barnet

This is the official organization that rules Bayport and its surrounding countryside. However, the city itself is the main power, the Duke is essentially a figurehead.

Demography and Population

The city is am eclectic mix of races and people from almost everywhere on earth.   The hinterlands are less mixed, still mostly being people of German, Anglo and Caric descent, plus large halfling and gnome communities, and elves and dwarves in the hills outside the valley.

Territories

The city of Bayport of course, plus the area around it, reaching to the hills to the north and south, for the most part. They control, practically, most of the valley to the east.

Trade & Transport

Bayport is a major trade hub. Goods move in and out by sea. There are also good roads teast to the Free Cities (Waynesburg, Dassal and so on), which are protected and havce become crucial to the prosperity of both BAyport and those cities. There are also decent roads into the hills, though these are by their nature more fraught with peril.

Legislative Body
Though the Duke is nominally the ruler, he is mostly a figurehead. Real power is held by a number of organizations in the city.   • The Baron’s Council: This group contained members drawn from various pools: appointed by the Duke; representatives of certain guilds; representatives elected from a larger pool of officials.   • Citizen’s Assembly - larger body, 120 people, elected every 2 years by something like the mass of the city. Landowners, taxpayers, various title holders or holders of positions in certain organizations vote. This is less explicitly corrupt than most such "elective" bodies.   • Board of governance, appointed by the Baron’s Council, which is more of an executive body, with various ministers.
