Váyathusa

The Váyathusa (Elvish, "hag of the storm") is the malevolent spirit said to cause the Hagstorms common among the coasts of Scalados and claim the souls of those whose lives the storm takes.   Those who are about to fall victim to the Váyathusa begin to hear a melody in the rising winds of the hagstorm. Once the harmonies of the many singing voices of the storm become clear, there is no escape from doom. The victims of the Váyathusa who plead for their lives sometimes return to shore without their voices, rendered completely mute but allowed to live. However, their soul is said to be caught up in the storm along with their voice. They invariably die within a few years, doomed to become one of the legions singing alongside the Váyathusa for all eternity.

Historical Basis

The Váyathusa is said to be related to Jezibaba, alternately described as either her daughter, her hagmaiden, or a manifestation of the Queen of Hags herself.
