Hagstorm

A hagstorm is the local terminology for the vicious storms that hit the coasts of Scalados and the northern Aquatic Kingdoms during late fall and winter. They are characterized by strong winds, rapid rotation around a low pressure center, and severe thunderstorms that may cause rapid flooding near rivers and coastal areas. The first sign of a hagstorm's approach is usually a significant drop in temperature, followed by increased wind speed and the sudden disappearance of birds and other wildlife in the area.
Sages disagree about whether they are caused merely by intense centers of low pressure pulling in currents of cold air from over the ocean, or if the sudden dips in pressure are from the direct influence of Jezibaba or other powerful hags.
In rural areas of Scalados, peasants sometimes scatter the bones of a chicken or game bird around their house before a storm approaches, as an offering to prevent Jezibaba from destroying their homes. Legends of the Váyathusa tell of unfortunate victims of the storm, drawn in by the songlike keening of the wind, whose voices and souls are stolen in its wrath.
