Triplets of Threnlila: Ch. 1

Heloise, tall and graceful, was a monk of Brigid the Bright. She fought with a staff of elder wood, and she prayed with the fire of the goddess in her eyes. Abelard, wise and winsome, was a Cleric of Dagda the Druid. He blessed the grain in the fields as he reaped, and the warmth of his smile was as that of Dagda's own hearth.   In their studying days the Valòmar passed, and they joined the sacred pilgrimage to the Citadel spires, to bless the new voice as they were chosen. And Abelard's eye caught a form in gold, training in the square with a dancer's grace. And Heloise's eye caught a form in green, handsome as a willow tree, smiling in prayer. Their eyes met across the Fount of the Blessed, and from then their fates were forever sealed.   The two youths shared a romance as pure as the summer sky, as passionate as a storm-tossed sea. As the elders debated and the election dragged on, the lovers stole away together every chance they could.   And yet, the Voice was chosen, and the monk and the cleric parted tearfully to finish their studies, as they knew they always must. But each held their love dear like a treasure. They passed scrolls to traveling scribes; they wrote secretly in the margins of loaned books. They made codes of symbols and allegories. They whispered their deepest love to the moon in the night air.   For some two hundred years they held love in their hearts for each other. Heloise yearned with a depth like the oceans, and took up the worship of Lugos to yoke her passions to His. Abelard dug deep into the lands of Dagda, patiently seeding the fertile land. Always, they stayed faithful. Always, they loved.
