Respite

Respite is a small, isolated village in the middle of the Verlorenwode, in the Southern Duchy of the Dreibach Empire. Despite its dangerous location and lack of connection to the rest of Dreibach, the few outsiders who have visited it describe its inhabitants as happy, healthy, prosperous, and incredibly welcoming.

Demographics

Unusually for a rural Dreibach village, there is a small population from the High Elf Diaspora that has existed since at least the Y500s CPX. They have intermingled with the Human and Halfling populations, bearing Half-Elf children. An above-average number of Tieflings are born in the village, with no known cause. There is a longstanding tradition of leaving tiefling newborns in the forest outside the village, so there are next to no adult tiefling residents in the village.

Government

The lord and lady of Respite, Baron Reynaud and Baroness Aubrey, are a High Elf couple who have ruled for decades. Rumors abound of their dalliances with townsfolk and visitors—often called the worst-kept secret in Respite—but beyond this, the townsfolk generally speak highly of them and respect their rule.
