A margrave is a noble who controls a margraviance. Unlike most other titles in the traditional monarchic system, a majority of modern margraves are elected or appointed to their positions to some extent, rather than inherited. Margraves typically serve on councils, with the
Count and/or
Countess of the larger region presiding over them.
In various regions
Aquatic Kingdoms
Most smaller islands, such as each of the
Near Isles, are their own margraviance. Within the idiosyncratic government of
Cape Hildegard, each dean on the
Council of Deans holds approximately the powers and duties of a margrave.
The equivalent to the margrave in Scalados is the
Kaiwel, who serves more as a traveling diplomat between their representative region and the
Citadel of the Wild.
A margrave of Cantonova or the
Borderlands is a
Wargrave, and each margraviancy represents not only a territory on the Material Plane, but also an archfey of the
Summer Court of the
Feywild. The wargrave is expected both to sit on the
Council of Wargraves in Cantonova and to serve the corresponding archfey as a
Warlock. In return, they gain impressive political and magical power, both of which often outlast their formally elected term (for better and for worse).
