Social Status
Frekhologists are often targets of suspicion outside academia (and sometimes within it). There are many stories, both true and fictional, of frekhologists who enter the field explicitly to connect to the Lower Planes, harness their power, and become a Warlock or Conjurer of fiends. Still other stories tell of frekhologists who initially held only a scholarly interest in evil being corrupted by occult texts and becoming vessels for evil spirits. Dedicated frekhologists open themselves up to fiendish influences; many have Tiefling children because of their constant proximity to fiendish artifacts and texts, furthering the outside world's suspicion of them. Still, the information gleaned by frekhologists is invaluable for understanding and thus defending against fiends' intrusion into the Material Plane.
History
The word frekhologist comes from the ancient Maráqat word frekh, meaning an evil or corrupting spirit (the same root found in the Sonan holiday Funifrekh). The oldest tradition of benign frekhology can be found in the Academia al-Sona, where it was developed as a defensive precaution during the raising of the city in the Age of Integrity.
