Fiend's Bane

Fiend's Bane is an Adventurer's guild dedicated to the eradication of the influence of Fiends on the Material Plane. It was one of the most famous adventurer's guilds in the world in the Y1070s and 1080s. However, many members have left because of ideological differences, aged out of their adventuring prime, or died from misadventure since that original peak.

Structure

Fiend's Bane is a democratic organization, with leadership rotating between members on a yearly basis. The vote of each full member is considered equal to any other. In recent years, junior members have been appointed, whose votes (if cast in person) count for half of a full member's vote.

Public Agenda

Fiend's Bane exists to rid the Material Plane of fiends and fiendish influence. They keep incredibly detailed logs of known or suspected portals between the Material Plane and any of the Lower Planes, as well as these portals' circumstances of creation and any potential defenses or hazards surrounding them.

Assets

The headquarters of Fiend's Bane is the Fiend's Bane Guildhall, one of the largest and most well-fortified buildings in Drakesland Wharf. It boasts a large meeting hall, a well-appointed library, and a number of magical charms and protections.

History

Fiend's Bane began its life as an adventuring party, originally consisting of humans Marnie and Ulrich (outlanders from the North) and the High Elf Diviner Faedor. The group traveled through Scalados as sellswords for roughly six months before making a name for themselves disbanding a reactionary cult of Levistus, the Shard of Shadow, in Port Nabucco in Y1071. A number of their most prominent members joined during this campaign, most notably the Illusionist Simone Arrowfern, the folk hero Mikhail Vanderaa, and the holy warriors Vera Trulove and Arthur Trulove. Thanks to their efforts, they were not only able to force the cult to disband, but they also locked Levistus into Stygia's icy abyss, preventing his appearance on the Material Plane for 39 years.   Due to the group's success against the Shard of Shadow and the efforts of their wizards, they were able to raise their mission to the Convocation of Wands, who were sympathetic to their anti-fiend mission and invested heavily in the group. A few members of the Convocation, most notably the Transmuter Lady Gjuy, pledged themselves to Fiend's Bane outright. With the help of the Convocation, they were able to further refine their methods of banishing fiends, closing portals, and freeing unlucky mortals who accidentally found themselves Beholden to fiends.   Various factions from Fiend's Bane continued to adventure across the Aquatic Kingdoms through the mid-1090s, though many aging members (including Marnie and Ulrich Fiendsbane and Arthur and Vera Trulove, who married during their adventures) settled down in Drakesland Wharf to have families. In Y1097, Marnie and Ulrich revealed to the guild that the daughter they had previously hidden from the guild, Zoë Fiensbane, had been born a Tiefling. This caused a schism in the guild, which lost a number of members who thought this was proof that Marnie and Ulrich had been corrupted by fiends during their travels.   After the schism, Fiend's Bane stopped active campaigns and largely remained at their headquarters. They pivoted to a role more akin to an intelligence agency, providing information from their large collections of Infernal and Abyssal texts to other adventurers seeking to defeat fiends and occasionally mitigating curses and pacts from those who sought them out in their remote home. By Y1110, an adventuring party called Fiend's Bane Alola, primarily made up of the children of Fiend's Bane's original members, began to petition for full-fledged membership and for a return to Fiend's Bane's adventuring past. The elder members of Fiend's Bane were, understandably, reluctant to let their children face the same dangers they had, and refused them membership until the Heroes of Cape Hildegard joined forces with them.   Fiend's Bane has since somewhat come out of retirement, playing pivotal roles in the Royal Phoenix Showdown and the defeat of the Order of Sarastro. The rise of the once-mortal archdevil Mescalina in the wake of Levistus's destruction forced the group to officially begin recruiting efforts anew, given the advanced age of many of its remaining members.

A very cool article, love the schism aspect of it and how it formed them from one purpose to another!
