Lord Defender

Novil l'Sondreu is the eldest son of Kentor l'Sondreu, a lesser noble from the costal province of Stanserley in the west. As a noble of a lesser house, Novil was never destined for much noteriety; however, as the son of an ambitious man, he was taught to seize his opportunites where he can find them.

Personal history

From an early age, Novil was taught the art of war. Like most Airdanians, he studied various forms of combat and weaponry. He was singled out as particularly adept with a greatsword from an early age due to his above average strength. He served in his father's house malitia until his election as Lord Defender.
As an officer in his house malitia, he was called to participate in skirmishes with Albion; but none of those battles gained him any acolades. However, he did gain a reputation for rash decisions while serving near the border of the Confederacy of Hanesia during this time. During Albion's suprise assult on Liyan, he learned of a caravan of refugees attempting to reach the Airdan Republic. While the Lord Defender Ornesen d'Garbo ordered all malitia to stand guard at the border; Novil decided to attempt to escort the refugees to saftey. He lead a group of 10 malitiamen into the beseiged lands of Hanesia to find the civilians and escort them to saftey. Upon his return, he was reprimanded by the Lord Defender, but many Members of the Lord's table were impressed by his selfless actions and he recived several nominations to succeed Ornesen d'Garbo a few months later.

Election to Lord Defender:
After Lord Defender Ornesen d'Garbo died in 834, the responsibility to elect a new leader fell on the Lord's Table. d'Garbo died during an interesting time with many believing war with Albion was immenent and others believeing the relative peace would continue. The Lord Defender is held to the highest standards on Airdanian society regardless, but there is a difference between a wartime Lord Defender and peacetime lord defender. The peculiar political circumstances meant that there was not one person fit for the position. Because of this, there were over a dozen nominations with none acheiving the required unanaimous decsions.
Archduke Roland d'Besk surprised the chamber by nominating Novil during the second round of nominations and continuting to lobby the other Lords and Dukes on his behalf. This nomination was particualry unusual for many reasons. The first being the Archduke traditionally refrains from putting forth any nominations. The second being Novil was from a lesser house and his family had very little internactions with the House d'Besk aside from the Lord's Table. And finally, Novil was not present during his nomination or assencion and was not aware of this until after he was deemed Lord Defender by the Lord's Table.
Novil was notified of his assencion five days after the Lord's Table unanimously raised him to the seat when an official courrier arrived at his base informing him of his new role. Initially believing the courrier to be part of a prank, he dismissed the idea laughing and continued his military duties. The courrier was forced to return to Mel Kanan. It was not until the Archduke himself arrived ten days later that Novil realized the seriousness of his new role.
Tenure as Lord Defender:
Following the initial shock, Novil took to his new role with enthusiasm and determination. Although he privatley confessed to his friends that he wondered why he was even nominated. Determined to avoid any conflict with Albion, he has increased personal relations with the Empirial Family as well as appointed several diplomats to the court in Albion.
Simultaneously, he has ordered all malitiamembers appear for seasonal training in various cities accross the country. He has openly stated that nationalizing the Airdan's military should be a top priority and has lobbied the Lord's Table to pass such resolution. He has also been accused of covertly providing funds and arms to the Confederacy of Hanesia by members of the Lord's Table and Albion. However, he has denied the allegations.

Religious Views

Like most of Alviera, Novil follows the Astral Host. As a serviceman in the malitia he found himself praying to Farend, Goddess of War and Ibin, God of Chance more than any other god. However, as Lord Defender, he has noticed he spends more time asking Fylena, Goddess of Peace and Iva, Goddess of Justice for guidence more than the other gods.

Social Aptitude

While serving as Lord Defender has hardened him since his days as in the malitia, he is still described as jovial, good natured, and fiercly loyal. However, his greated fault is his impatience and tendency toward rash decisons. It is said that he enjoys the Lord Defender's National Tours above all other duties despite the fact, it is considered the most redundant part of the job. He enjoys engaging with other Airdanians and listening to their concerns. Becasue of this, he has earned the respect of the people of Airdan and many believe he cares for them more than the Dukes and Lords.
Novil has proven himself to be more politically inclined than even he expected. He is used to trusting his instincts during his time in the malitia, but now those instincts have proven to be useful when dealing with the Lord's Table and Archduke d'Besk. However, his impatience is a fault that he has yet to overcome. He worries that this vice will be his bane and prevent him from succeeding as Lord Defender.

Speech

Novil is known to make jokes whenever he engages in conversation. Sometimes it is hard to tell if he is taking the matter of discussion seriously, but he always is. Novil uses jokes as a way to gage the sincerity of the person he is talking to and to throw them off guard and gain the upper hand during negotiations. He also just really enjoys jokes and good natured discussions.
