History
Prior to the Sundering of Ankaluun, the settlement on the island of Jax a fairly large seaside town they simply called Jax which was populated by indigenous peoples of the archipelago and a sizeable number of adventurous folks who had left Ankaluun in search of something more. The town had a trade route back to the continent and it was prosperous, yet remote enough to be far from the machinations of those on the mainland.
At the time of the Sundering, the entire world shook as the continent was torn apart. The very crust of the plant was ripped apart, and while The Rift is the most obvious result of that event it is not the only. From the gentle hills in the center of the island burst a huge mountain spitting fire and ash. The ground shook and many buildings in the town fell, but then came the flows of lava rolling across the landscape with no mercy. The town was almost completely destroyed and only a few stone buildings managed to survive the onslaught. A full 80 percent of the town's population was killed during that intitial eruption and only those who lived nearest the water were able to escape onto the sea until the lava cooled.
Eventually, the remaining people of Jax came back onto land to survey what was left. The lava had burned away their homes and much of the vegetation on that part of the island, but it had also exposed protected caves with freshwater springs inside. The survivors moved into these caves and spent several years subsisting on what they could harvest from the sea and forage from the parts of the island that were less devastated by the volcano. After a few years of hard work and no more major eruptions they decided to begin to rebuild the town on the surface. They mined granite from the caves to build some measure of protection from future blasts and dug huge trenches in the ground to encourage any lava flows to divert away from the rebuilt town. As the town began to be restored it also grew, and many more people fled Ankaluun and the chaos there. Jax grew into a city and was renamed Tel'Jax to distinguish itself from the island and lend the city itself some gravitas.
