Legend of Balthazar Book 01: The Skyburner's Oath

All adventures have a genesis, this is no different.

Created & Written by Khali A. Crawford
"In a Universe out of order, where the dead walk amongst the living and war plagues every major star system, only the Knights of the Iron Order stand between the cosmos and utter chaos. The Iron Order has upheld its precious balance for eons now and maintains the borders of the 1st and 2nd Kingdoms. Within such an order, Magical Power and might are favored above all else, and the hero of this epic lacks these things. Balthazar Skyburner, the man who one day have his name known in every corner of Yggdrasil, starts his journey like all others."

Plot points/Scenes

ACT ONE

Young Balthazar Skyburner is recruited by Iron Lady Nabeth shortly after his mother's death to the Desolation. He is brought to Mountain where he, and other young Squires, are put through a tough Gambit to evaluate their capabilities. This also serves as a chance for the various Lords and Ladies to choose new Squires to train. During this Gambit, Balthazar performers poorly in all events, lumped in with two other "failures"; Haroli Al-Hashimi who, despite being of such renowned blood, is unruly and brash & Jean-Louis F. Boudreaux who has exceptional Magical Ability but lacks any emotion or enthusiasm. Balthazar's body is frail and his Magical Ability is lame, it would be foolish to train him at all.   Other squires include the arrogant and prideful Nadakami U. Sadako, royalty from the Sea-Folk people on Neptune. Laëtitia La'Fromboise, a defect clone of her twin sister with a big heart exceptional recovery skills. Rey Kerrisk, a run-away girl from the Imperium lacking skill but overflowing in resolve and spirit. Loholt Pendragon, Son of Mordred and brother to the Black Prince. Dul’Hurror, son of a famous Knight, more beast than man but loyal if not somewhat aloof. Poppy A. Newgate, an ambitious young woman with high intellect and magical knowledge.   Lady Nabeth takes on all three problem children despite their shortcomings and resolves to train them on Mountain in her old home, where she was trained years ago by her Master. For the next six years, the Squires would remain in the harsh conditions of Mountain honing their Knightly Arts, Magecraft, and growing stronger. Eventually, the Knighting Ceremony is upon them and the Squires are charged with making their way to the Peak where they first took the Gambit 6 years prior.   Sadako, Laëtitia, and Rey all make it there first and encounter the 1st challenge, a massive magical boulder they must pass. At the second challenge, where a great elemental monster awaits the Loholt, Dul'Hurror, and Poppy arrive to defeat it and both teams move forward.   Meanwhile, Nabeth and the other Lords and Ladies observe the Squires' work but note that Balthazar and his team have yet to arrive. Nabeth assures them they will. Others are wary of Loholt, they fear he could follow the same path as James and betray the order. He should not be allowed to progress further, but the 3 Wise Men, speaking on the Iron Mother's Behalf, dismiss such thoughts.   A great sea beast rises from the ocean and crashes onto the Peak, dead, with Balthazar, Haroli, and Jean-Louis inside. Upon learning they are late, they rush to the last challenge which is a massive forest maze made from strange wood and trees that change the layout, making it impossible to pass. Despite being instructed not to destroy the maze, when Haroli arrives he immediately unleashes his magic and burns a path straight through the forest. When the forest attempts to strike him, Jean-Louis shields them with his Wooden Tome.   The three teams push forward, with Haroli taunting Sadako before rushing to the finish with his brothers in tow, much to Loholt's amusement. Once all the teams arrive at the Temple of Iron Peaks, they are greeted by the 3 Wise Men and the various Lords and Ladies. With all the Squires present, they begin the Knighting Ceremony.

ACT TWO

The Ceremony is a simple test, where the Squires are dispatched to a different planet in Midgard to fulfill a mission, being observed by the Order via Scrying Eyes to evaluate their abilities and intelligence. The Squires are all given training armor and allowed to choose one weapon to aid them on their journey. Balthazar picks a sword and shield, Jean-Louis picks a spear, and Haroli decides he needs no weapon, he is the weapon.   Before they can be dispatched, each team will need to pick a leader, someone to give orders and take responsibility during the mission. While Sadako and Loholt's teams discuss amongst themselves, Balthazar, Jean-Louis, and Haroli immediately step forward having elected Balthazar to be the leader some time ago. The 3 Wise Men are surprised and are eager to see how Young Skyburner measures up against the two powerhouses on his team. Nabeth bids her boys good luck, though they don't need it, and the 3 boys are Shatter-Pointed from Mountain...

Tavara is a world occupied by the Vykeel, a race of scavengers who latch onto planets and abuse them. They promised the Tavarains peace and prosperity from the Imperium and the Commonwealth, but once they controlled the world, they enslaved the people. They banned the practice of magic, demand tithes from Tavara's rich mines to be paid every day to the Vykeel Temple, and forbid collaboration of any kind. All of this is enforced with the Feathered Ones, bioengineered enforcers who overpower a Tavaraian 100 to one.   On this night, 20 Feathered One raid a small city, dragging out rebels to be executed in front of everyone on orders of Vykeel-Don, the Vykeel who was put in charge of this world. Vykeel-Don has some 70 men and women brutally killed, with much more crippled and some taken hostage, he increases the tithe amount this city must pay daily and returns to his temple.   Vykeel-Don is contacted by the Vykeel Council and he informs than that Tavara is back on schedule to pay off their debt to an unknown party. The Council warns Vykeel-Don to ensure such drops in payment do not happen again, else it will be all of their heads that roll. Under his massive Temple, Vykeel-Don has an unknowable amount of massive trains filled with Tavaraian minerals being sent into an alien portal, manned by enslaved Tavaraians. He cuts their breaks and demands they work faster to get more minerals into the portal every day.   In the remains of the charred city, Feathered Ones refuse the Tavaraians the right to bury the dead and just burn their bodies, demanding they get to the mines to meet their new quotas. A small child rebels and declares she will die before she bows to them. Before the Feathered Ones kill her, the sky booms and cracks as the night clouds part and a beam of light shatters the sky, landing in the city. Before the Feathered Ones stand 3 Knights of the Iron Order, given only objective; FREE TAVARA.   Haroli dispatches of the Feathered Ones and the city mayor, Erwyn, explains what has happened to his world, believing the 3 boys to be the forward or scouting force. He becomes upset when he learns they are all that is coming and urges his citizens to get back to work in the mines. If Balthazar wants to gain his and his people's trust, they will need to prove it. Erwyn's wife spoke of a weapons depot to the east where Vykeel-Don stockpiled many weapons and arms, if they can require that point, Erwyn will trust them.   Haroli questions why they should bother and instead wants to go for Vykeel-Don himself, but Jean-Louis doubts it would be so easy without the Tavaraian's aid. The three of them find passage to the weapons depot. It is crawling with Feathered Ones, whom they slip past. It would not be too difficult to defeat all the Feathered Ones but causing a big scene would likely attract more attention. Instead, Balthazar deduces that splitting up the forces would be smarter.   Haroli hijacks a train of arms and causes a diversion, taking a good number of guards with him. Jean-Louis picks off the remaining Feathered Ones one by one while Balthazar taps into the Vykeel network, interrupted by a Crow Mother, a "Queen" for the lower level Feathered Ones. Although Balthazar defeats her, she sends a message directly to Vykeel-Don before self-destructing.   Vykeel-Don informs the council of the events at the depot and the mysterious light in the sky earlier, to which the Council scolds him for not revealing sooner. It is a Shatter-Point, and this means the Iron Order has been dispatched to Tavara. Vykeel-Don is not worried, the Order only sent 3 halflings and he has already captured one of them, plus he still has his hostages in Tadu, he is in control.   Erwyn is surprised the boys captured the depot and has his people secure the outpost. Haroli contacts Balthazar and informs him he was overpowered and is now captured, en-route to some type of city. This is Tadu, the planet's capital, and largest city, it is where Vykeel-Don has millions of hostages used to keep the other Tavarians in line. Erwyn is willing to put faith in Balthazar but they need to secure Tadu first, the risk to their people is far too great if they cannot stop Vykeel-Don from killing his hostages.   Vykeel-Don sends more Feathered Ones to Tadu, Iron Lords are sworn by their Oath Eternal to protect all life at any cost that they can, they have no choice but to go to Tadu. The 3 Wise Men and Iron Order watch the boys, their eyes resting on Young Balthazar, his leadership is called into question. Killing Vykeel-Don would be the fastest way to victory but he could immediately order Tadu to be destroyed, killing millions. But going to Tadu could be a trap to kill them all regardless, millions of lives in one boy's hands, how does it affect him?   On the tram to Tadu, Erwyn lays out the city map and goes over a plan, He has been planing on raiding Tadu for months now, ever since Vykeel-Don took his son. Balthazar questions where all the minerals that they mine go but Erwyn is unsure. In the Vykeel Network he learned the massive volume at which minerals are taken and "shipped", they would need an impressive Starport and a fleet of Starships, which Tavara has neither of.

ACT THREE

Haroli regains his strength and escapes his bonds as his train arrives at Tadu, swarming with Feathered Ones. Tadu was once a proud city and center point for culture and ideas, but now its historical building was in ruins and its roads cracked. Millions of Tavarians lived like animals, sleeping on the streets and huddled together in groups. Most of the bodies Haroli came across did not move, Vykeel-Don didn't seem to think of importing enough food or rations for the hostages.   Haroli came across some thugs trying to take food from a young boy and chased them off. The boy is Kip and identifies Haroli as the offworlder who attacked the weapon's depot, the news was huge in Tadu, some people even got a little hopeful. Haroli gave the starving Kip the remainder of his Order Rations, which he shared with some of the other kids he looked after.   Kip explained that he knew one day the Iron Order would come, everyone believes the Order is dead but he believed, his father told him stories of the great Knights of Old who followed an Eternal Oath and always did what was right, no matter the cost. And so, Kip kept his ear to the ground and learned that outside of the Feathered Ones, there are six large 0 Point Bombs under the city in the sewer system. Kip and some of the other kids would run around in the sewers sometimes and found clusters of Feathered Ones guarding weird structures. Kip claims he found 4 of these clusters.   Haroli doesn't want to bring a kid into battle but Kip refuses to remain behind, he wants to be a brave Knight, plus only he knows the right way through the maze that is the sewer system. Together they descend into the system and begin their search. Haroli also learns more about the minerals being moved off-world from Kip. According to him, when the Vykeen first arrives about 2-3 years ago, they were super desperate to begin mining for gems and jewels that they promised the Tavarians anything, basically begging to begin mining. Kip was shocked to see adults acting like spoiled children about to throw a hissy fit, almost like they were very afraid of something.   Haroli comes across the 1st bomb but can't figure out how to disarm it. Kip apologizes for not figuring that information out sooner but Haroli finds a solution. Magical Energy, when released from the body in an unfiltered state, can disrupt certain sophisticated electrics and systems. Concentrating his energy, Haroli scrambles the bomb's systems, taking it offline. Kip is amazed by this and begs Haroli to teach it to him, later though.   Balthazar gets another message from Haroli regarding the bombs under the city. This complicates things as they could blow at any moment. Erwyn organizes his people from a raiding party into a rescue party, they will steal as many trams as they can and start moving people out of Todu, with Balthazar and Jean-Louis as back-up for the Feathered Ones.   The Council demand to know why Vykeel-Don won't denote his bombs now but he wants to wait until all the knights and rebels are in one place, to make a swift and quick example of them all. They advise against this and some begin to question whether this is still worth the Iron Mother's wrath, but if their debt is not repaid, worse things than death await them all. After the meeting, Vykeel-Don is informed that 3 of his 6 bombs have already been disarmed. He orders more Feathered Ones to protect the remaining 3 and to ensure the other knights make it to Todu.   Haroli and Kip arrive at the 4th bomb but are attacked by Crow Mothers and more Feathered Ones who take Kip hostage. They try to force Haroli to take his own life but instead he activates his ocular ability: SHIVA! It destroys magical energy on sight and has a strange effect on the engineered freaks who now find their Magical boons weekend. The Iron Order watch with great intent, they knew he was of Al-Hashimi blood but didn't know he inherited that technique. While they all praised the young man's talents, Lady Nabeth prayed Balthazar was not far, as Haroli had not yet mastered SHIVA.   Haroli saved Kip and defeated the Feathered Ones but his eyes were bleeding from overuse of SHIVA, and his magical energy was sapped, he would need a tie to recover. Kip stood guard over the sleeping body.   Tadu came into sight and the Feathered Ones decent upon the trains, plucked out of the air by massive wooden hands, controlled by Jean-Louis who would provide cover for the trams to get inside. The trams docked and began taking in hostages to shuttle them out. Balthazar zipped through the city, cutting down Feathered Ones and providing back-up as best he can. Erwyn begins to question why the bombs hadn't gone off yet and leave Balthazar to lead the education while he heads down into the sewers to locate Haroli.   Vykeel-Don begins to panic as he learns that the sequence of the bombs has been disrupted, the remaining 2 will now need to be denoted manually with arming keys. He'll dispatch two Crow Mothers to arm the bombs and end-all of this today, no problem. Only, most of the Crow Mothers are busy fighting the Knights, two Feathered Ones could do it but they have lower attention and intelligence, but they will have to do for now.   Haroli and Kip hobble to the 5th bomb but Haroli hasn't regained enough energy to scramble it. Just as a Feathered One arrives, it is killed by Erwyn who is speechless to see his son alive down here of all places. He recognizes the craftsmanship of the bomb and disables it, believing he can do the same for the last one. Haroli makes them leave him behind, he will only slow them down, and they rush off to find the last bomb.   More trams carrying armed rebels arrive to provide aid to Balthazar and Jean-Louis, Balthazar leaves it to them and heads down into the sewers to help out Erwyn. Vykeel-Don receives word that a Feathered One has finally armed the last bomb manually, and prepares to detonate it. Erywn kills the Feathered One but cannot stop the countdown timer. Kip believes they can use what little Magica Energy they have to scramble the bomb to slow it down or to buy time. They exert with all their might but it's not enough. The bomb reaches one and explodes.   Kip and Erwyn wake up safely on the surfaces, protected by Haroli who caught up to them at the last second. The bomb went off but it wasn't enough to destroy the city. The rebels clear out the remaining Feathered Ones and secure Tadu as theirs once again. Vykeel-Don quickly learns of his failure, he lost a great many Feathered Ones in this battle as well and the Knights would surely be upon him soon. Vykeel-Don gathered 5 Crow Mothers as his Guard and hastily fled Tavara, not daring to show his shame to the council.

ACT FOUR

Erwyn and the Knights investigate the Vykeel Temple, now crawling with remaining Feathered Ones easily dispatched. They come to the massive station under the tower, where hundreds of Tavarian slaves were recently murdered in Vykeel-Don's hasty escape. A few are only wounded and confirm they were made to send the minerals into the arcane portal before them, but any who entered never returned.   Balthazar resolves to go in and search for any possible survivors with Haroli and Jean-Louis. Erwyn is unsure how long he can keep the portal open and urges them to make haste, he has no idea where it leads or how to re-open it if it closes.   In the portal, the Knights find themselves in an impossibly huge realm with golden pillars that disappear into the sky. Mountains and hills of gold coins, treasure, and jewels surround them, and 12 massive suns center the room. They stick close to the tram tracks and indeed find serval Tavarians whom they send back to the portal. Balthazar goes deeper into the realm to search for the last worker and finds his body near a golden pedestal.   This small temple has emerald steps and is surrounded by 6 giant golden apes with masks. Balthazar ascended the steps and found a great sword wrapped in golden cloth, almost calling out to him. He picked it up and something about it felt ... right. Just as he began to return to the tracks, the great mountain of gold and treasure shifted and a great beast's head emerged from a deep slumber. A dragon. The Dragon; Zu Tan Xo. His treasure had been plundered and the Vykeel have gone back on their word!   Jean-Louis got one of the trams working and they make a quick escape as the dragon slowly came to and took chase, monsters rose from the gold to attack them and the 12 suns began to fireballs of heat at them. As Zu Tan Xo caught up with them, Haroli grabbed Jean-Louis and Balthazar before leaping from the train to speed off with all his remaining strength, calling for Erwyn to close the portal NOW! As the portal fades from reality, the 3 brothers jump through just in the nick of time.   Erwyn can't thank the Knights enough for their efforts and offer them all riches but they don't take any of the rewards. Kip bids Haroli farewell and asks if he can be a strong knight like him someday, to which Haroli is sure of it. The sky shatters once again and the 3 brothers and called back to Mountain.

ACT FIVE

Balthazar wakes up back in a Temple on Mountain, recovering from his mission when he is fetched by a Guard to report to the Hall. In this magical Hall, Balthazar is met by Kikazaru, one of the 3 Wise Men, who gives him his final test, a simple question; Why Are You Here, Young Man? Some Knights would seek to chase fame, others would seek material goals like riches, but what is it that drives you, Balthazar. Kikazaru is persistent and will not let Balthazar leave this room until he gets an honest answer.   Balthazar recalls his tragic origins, his frail body, his shitty life until Nabeth found him and gave him this. He was born into this world with nothing, he won't die like that, he won't waste what Clarissa Skyburner gave him. Balthazar takes up a battle stance and declares he will not waste his life!   Haroli is confused by the question, why must there be a reason to pursue greatness, is greatness itself not worthy of the pursuit in the first place? He comes from a long line of warriors and Mages who were feared across the cosmos, but that name has been shamed and abused. Haroli is here for the glory of Knighthood, to carry on his mother's wishes; bring glory to the House of Al-Hashimi once again! Haroli unleashes SHIVA and proudly declares who he is.   Jean-Louis is frank and blunt; he does not care about the Order, the Imperium, the Commonwealth, or even Tavara. He lost everything once because he could not be of use to his family, but now that he has a new family, he will be strong and valuable to them. he goes where his brothers go, and if that leads them against the Order, then so be it! Jean-Louis spreads his legs and summons his Wooden Tome, devoted to his brothers.   The lights fade and the 3 boys are in the Knighting Hall together, some of the Guards are alarmed to see all 3 of them ready to go to war with an unseen enemy. The 3 are separated and each downed in a Kevlar-like suit and knightly armor befitting their Clan, rank, and title. Balthazar received a Captain's helm and dense armor to compensate for his frail body, dawned in dark purple cloaks. Jean-Louis received templar's armor to compliment his athletic and tall build with a purple shoulder cape. Haroli received warrior armor with the faces of monsters engraved in golden pieces, with blue and purple garps.   All 9 squires, now with official Knightly armor, are brought before the Iron Lords and kneel, as they knight each and every one of them. After the ceremony, Loholt congratulates everyone on their hard work and they all share in a sort of graduation meal feast with their masters. Their dinner is interrupted by Minx, a Forgemaster who was charged with restoring the blade Skyburner retrieved from the Dragon's lair. She demands Balthazar follow her to her forge.   They all follow Minx to her forge and she reveals the blade was properly restored but she cannot lose it from its stone-keep, believing it will only yield to Balthazar. He takes hold of it and pulls the weapon free, followed by a brilliant flash of light. The sword magically fits Balthazar's size and its Rainbow-Diamond blade is put on full display, just as Minx thought. This is the fabled 'God Shattering Star', a blade capable of killing anything.
After the ceremony, the new Chapter of Knights prepares to be sent to the Planet Challenge, which will be placed under their protection as their responsibility, along with the sector. Nabeth meets with her boys before they depart, imparting some final words of wisdom; She instructs Haroli to never lose his warrior spirit, for Balthazar to have more faith in his own abilities, and for Jean-Louis to look after his brothers.   Nabeth also tells Balthazar that she returned to Mars shortly after bringing him to the Order to find his mother, Clarissa, who was being taken by the Desolation. She requested that Nabeth give her ashes to Balthazar to spread across the Universe when he was ready, that time is now.   The 9 Knights depart for the world Challenge, with Balthazar excited to begin his adventure.

Goals

  • Balthazar, Jean-Louis, and Haroli are deployed to Planet Tavara to free it from the claws of the Vykeel Council to earn their full marks as Iron Knights.

Planet Mountain

"Planet Mountain" by Crawford, Khali
Mountain is both the first steps of all Iron Knights but also where they all eventually come to make their last stand. So long ago when New Camelot first warped into this Universe, it crashed on Mountain. The Knights of that era were stranded and faced death at the hands of a strange and alien world but through sheer force of will and determination, they prevailed.

Planet Tavara

Planet Tavara
A small planet located in the Denizen System, it is a natural world, separated from the politics of the Universe, but now ruled by the abusive and greedy Vykeel Council, who enslave its people and gut its world. Tavara is a cold planet with landmasses broken up by rushing rivers, towering peaks, and deep valleys. Cities are built at the top of mountains to avoid frequent flooding and the primary form of transportation are heavy-duty trams.

Past Events

The Black Prince

75 years prior to the events of this novel, Mordred's nephew, James D. Pendragon, and a number of Forgemasters from the Dragon Forge betrayed the order. They aligned themselves with the Imperium of Midgard and killed a great many of Iron Lords, including the previous 12th Primus. Mordred did battle with his confused nephew but James mortally wounded him and escaped. Since then Mordred has been in a deep slumber, struggling to recover in his old age. This split the Order and created instability in the leadership. Moreover, some believe James's mind was poisoned by Chaos and elect to kill Mordred's son, Loholt, to prevent Mordred from dying.

Novel Title Meaning

Book 01 of this Series is called 'The Skyburner's Oath' in reference to the promise young Balthazar makes to his mother, Clarissa Skyburner, to explore the Universe as they always promised they would do together, but she died before it could happen. Balthazar is keeping his promise, his oath, and struggles through the trails of Knighthood to embark on his journey.
