The Library of Eons lies deep within the mountain Protevousa surrounds, an ever-twisting series of chambers, rooms, and stairwells sprawling across more floors than most will ever explore in their lifespans.
Design
The library spans buildings on the face of the mountain as well as a majority of the base of the mountain. The outer buildings are crafted from the stone excavated while creating the library, and each building holds a genre of records, books or media.
The chambers and bookshelves themselves are carved out of the mountain, and the excavated stone and materials were used to build the city's government buildings. The Library itself has a multitude of clearance levels and while the upper floors are open to the public, you must be accompanied to the deeper floors by an archivist. Part of that is security, but another part is the lower levels act like a maze, leaving those without guides to get lost in the seemingly endless records.
The entire library is extremely well-lit by magical and nonmagical means in order to protect the information from any Darkness attempting to infiltrate the library. In the center of the mountain, a pillar of radiant light passes through all of the library's floors. It is securely sealed with magic and reinforced stained glass to prevent people from assumedly falling through the light and down to the bottom floor...wherever that might be.
Contents by Area
The upper floors hold public records of governing bodies, family trees, and fictional books of all genres. Biographies and autobiographies are also quite popular, and each has its own respective floor. The Library of Eons is called such due to its extensive documentation of the lives of its citizens, past and present. Almost all personal information recorded is freely given, some are added retroactively but are notated as such.
The deeper levels hold records of historical events, government records, and population demographics and polls. The extent of these levels is categorized by time span, and deeper floors appear after every decade to accommodate new information. It is unclear how these new levels appear, as the previous floors shift downwards in the occurrence of a new floor.
Archivists and Protectors
Those who work at the library are referred to as a
Record Keeper, and they are considered the guardians of knowledge. Those who seek knowledge of the lower floors must have the clearance level and approval of each of the floor's Record Keepers, or they will not be allowed in. This has infuriated many nobles, especially as the passing of the Sovereign title leads to reallocated clearance levels.
I want to visit and go for a wander for like a week. <3
