Built along the Kiutt Channel that separates Orellias and Adais, the Avlinn States is a federal republic. It consists of four separate states - Camlann, Idunn, Erdann, and Satrell. Despite its small amount of area, Avlinn is one of the three major countries in political power, and features one of the most powerful navies. Many consider it the entertainment capitol of the north. The three major gods worshiped in the area are Camio, Edro, and Fiora.
Etymology
Avlinn stems from 'alvi', which means 'the people' in old Camlich, and 'jinn', which means 'home'. Historically, the name was 'Alvi'l'jinn' - or 'the people's home'. Overtime, this was shortened and the glottal stops denoted by ' were glossed over. The j then fell out of use - replaced by the possession marker 'l'. Finally, the initial l within 'alvi' was also dropped.
Geography
Physical
Avlinn is made up of fairly flat land. The north-western and central area has some hills, connecting to the mountainous region just east of their borders. The most central area features a large valley centered around the Vysurr lake, though the area is now restricted from public access. Several major rivers run through the nation, including the Fiorr, which runs throughout Idunn. The eastern coast is littered with high cliffs and several coves - most famous of which is the Cove of Ansaa.
Political
Most of Avlinn is surrounded by water - the western and part of the southern coast by the Soo-ai ocean and the north by the Kihynn Sea. The rest of the southern border and parts of the east directly border Tveysha. There is a small part of the south-west border next to the ocean that is sometimes considered part of the Golden City's territory, but it is unoccupied.
During a plague, the city built walls around part of the north-eastern area to separate victims and attempt to slow the tide of the disease. Several centuries later, another wall began construction across the Tveyshan border. It would eventually be abandoned before its completion. Both are now in various stages of disrepair and dismantlement.
The States
Camlann
Full Article: Camlann
The first official state, Camlann consists heavily of farmland. It borders the ocean on the north and western sides, and dips down into the central part of the States. Unlike the glitz and glam of Idunn and Erdann, Camlann's strongest industries are farming and fishing. It houses the official government building inside the capitol of Camett, as well as the first Order of Arks of the States. The coastal area of Camett features a tighter urban city area, while the further inland areas are far more rural. There are two train stops along the inner city train. The most popular area is on the border of Camett, with another stop being in a small town of Sett in the north central area.
Healer Republic
Full Article: Satrell
Despite being named Satrell, the state is nearly always referred to as the Healer Republic. Located in the north-eastern corner, it is the only state built on the outside of the Red Wall - though that is currently partially dismantled. The Healer Republic hosts a dark part of the States history, formed as a 'sick city' to house any individual who could potentially have carried a deadly plague several centuries ago. Since then, it has become dedicated to medical studies and houses several of the most advanced medical buildings on Orellias. The areas that have extended from the main central city are mostly populated with farms and livestock.
Erdann
Full Article: Erdann
Erdann is the tourism central of Avlinn. The twin state of Idunn, Erdann is sometimes referred to as 'the city you don't want to sleep'. A saying that is the opposite of Idunn. Running along the southern-most central and eastern edges of the nation, the state is separated into three major cities. Crio follows the southern border, Ydunn encircles the majority of the center and the western border, and Dacimm along the north border. Ydunn is the largest of all three, encompassing areas that were formerly part of Idunn (hence the similar names), as well as being home to the highly famous Eoss District. This area is well known for its casinos and similar tourism sites, which bring in all the profits within the area. Unlike the other areas, few parts of Erdann retain traditional structures. It mostly consists of modern skyscrapers - especially within the central most areas of Ydunn. The central most train that runs through all the states stops in Ydunn, while Crio hosts the only stop of the Tveyshan train system within the States. It also houses the second Order of Arks within the states.
Idunn
Full Article: Idunn
Idunn is the most populated state within Avlinn, while maintaining the smallest area. It is the twin state of Erdann and has earned the nickname 'The city that won't let you sleep', often due to the loud music that can be heard in downtown areas at all times of day. Idunn is often romanticized due to its strong presence in creating both music and movies. It consists of two main areas - the central portion and the outer ring. The distinction is made by a river that runs through the state in a u like shape with a small tale connecting to the ocean. The central area is mostly commercialized and contains more modern buildings and many skyscrapers. The outer ring features more residential areas, and is less played up to the public eye. The only area outside the central ring that gains much attention are the beaches during the seasons mermaids do not pose a threat to visitors.
While initially settled in the mid-400's, it would be another century before the region was recognized with the birth of a their central god - Camio. The nation would be founded under a monarchy. Its early years were fairly insignificant, with many viewing it as a middling power. It would struggle through several smaller skirmishes before its first major conflict occurring from within. After years of rising tensions with the nobility, the citizens would revolt at the end of the 8th century. This would eventually lead to the fall of the kingdom over a decade later.
Afterwards, the nation would be reformed as a republic. Not long after, they expanded their borders and accepted the second state of Idunn, followed by Erdann a century later. With the birth of their second and third gods, they began to gain attention as a rising power. Three gods born into a smaller region was significant at this point in time, and the three were soon officially invited into higher standing ranks within the Golden City.
The 12th century would see the end of the State's golden age with the onset of a terrible plague that would infest the city for months. Though it spread outside the region, Avlinn experienced the worst of its effects. While it seemed things may be turning around with the addition of their fourth state (and the avoidance of another rebellion), more tragedy would strike in the form of Vynass. Originally intended to be the fifth state, Vynass was a popular area for the first few decades of its existence. Then it began to experience years of failed crops and strange illnesses. In less than a century, the area was declared inhabitable and restricted from public access. While there were other attempts to add on more states to the area, many failed. All attempts would stop at the beginning of the Hundred's War.
Avlinn initially remained neutral during the war, before eventually throwing their own efforts in. They allied with Somam and sent an invading force to occupy the Tveyshan country of Astolat. Though there were attempts to push further, it all failed as their own hold on the region began to slip. Before the area could fight back, the war ended. As part of the treatise, Avlinn removed their troops from Tveyshan soil. To this day, tension exists between the two regions.
