Spain

Spain, also known as the Spanish Empire, is a paramount power in Europe, a combination of the Kingdom of Castile and the Kingdom of Aragon into a massive power that almost controls the entire Iberian peninsula, if not for the Portuguese. From the late 15th century, Spain managed to discover and colonize a set of island nations known as the Caribbean but failed to find anything north and south of the colonies. In Europe however, they are a very powerful kingdom in both land and sea, having built up great influence in the Italian states as well, following the ousting of the French from Italy in 1516 and the ceding of Naples to the Crown of Aragon.

History

In the 15th century, the Kingdom of Spain sought major glory after recently expelling the Moorish Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula, thus ending the 800 year-long ‘Reconquista’, which gave the Catholic Spanish a chance to become an enormous power in Europe. With Columbus’ discovery of the New World in 1492 and the subsequent Spanish conquest of Cuba, this opened up Spain's ability to expand its glorious power west but fell short when they couldn't find anything north and south of the Caribbean - that is, until Cortés traveled west even further.

Territories

In Europe, Spain controls almost the entire Iberian peninsula and the state of Naples in Italy. In recent years, they also now control the Holy Roman Empire as well after Charles V was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1519. In Ocrea, Castle Cortés and its surrounding areas, as well as a few islands given to the Spanish crown by the Shajin Clan, are the Empire's main holdings on the continent of Ocrea.

Military

During the 16th century, Habsburg Spain saw a steady growth in its military power. During the Italian Wars, the Spanish Army transformed its organization and tactics, evolving from a primarily pike and halberd wielding force into the first pike and shot formation of musketeers and pikemen, known as the "Pike and Shot." During the 16th century, the Spanish military became one of the most efficient fighting-force in Europe and abroad, following the capture of several islands to the west and the defeat of the French in Italy, and is considered one of the strongest nations in Europe.

Religion

The Spanish are heavily influenced by the Roman Catholic Church, who are headed by the Pope, which has become one of the key components of the entire Iberian peninsula.
