Lochdomhan

The road to the city is accompanied by the cries of seagulls, the smell of saltwater, and the occasional crash of waves upon the rocky shore. Up ahead, Lochdomhan comes into view. The town is well concealed by its walls. Beyond the walls lies the Jewel of the Coast. They say whatever you're looking for you can find it here.

Lochdohman city map
Lochdomhan is a coastal city, bustling with sailors, merchants, and craftsmen of all trades. It’s nestled along both the shoreline and the Clearwater River, with large walls surrounding the city on its land faces.   According to legend, it originally served as a harbor when the continent was being explored by the first humans, quickly growing into a city in its own right as more and more humans settled the area. The city's name Lochdomhan supposedly translates to “Jewel of the Coast” in the lost language of the first humans that settled the area. The vast amount of trade goods that enter Lochdomhan each day make it an ideal spot for those seeking something rare and special. The port allows access to ships for easy and fast transport to the other realms to anyone with the coin to pay for a fare.

Demographics

Generally each race has some representation in the city at any time, but the demographics are the following:
  • Humans: 56% (33,600)
  • Halflings: 23% (13,800)
  • Elvish*: 15% (9,000)
  • Dwarves: 4% (2,400)
  • Other: 2%  (1,200)
  • *Includes half-elves.

    Government

Lochdomhan is the county seat of Hone County with the current ruler being Countess Anastasia Hone. Since she must oversee the largest country in Gaelndor, Countess Hone leaves day-to-day governance to the Board of Aldermen. There are five aldermen and Countess Hone tends to choose the most generous of her financial backers as aldermen.   Although technically headed by Countess Hone herself, the City Guard is operated by the aldermen.

    Defences

The land portion of the city is walled, with manned guard posts positioned around it. The Count or Countess chooses how their city is policed; currently a force of several hundred guards patrol the streets to keep the peace. On short notice, the harbor could muster a standing force of just over a thousand men to defend their walls.

    Industry & Trade

Lochdomhan survives on trade. Merchants come into town to sell their wares to residents and other travelers. Local shops restock travelers’ supplies and equipment. The Count/Countess has the right to ban the sale of certain goods, which has led to a vast black market as well.

    Guilds and Factions

    • The City Guard
    • Trunkheart University - the largest University in Gaelndor. The various colleges of the university provide a myriad of services for travelers. The University can be contacted for bard services, alchemist services, medical services, just to name a few.
    • The Weatherfair Sailor's Guild - an independent sailor's and dockworker's guild. Their guildhall provides lodging and food for visiting sailors at reduced prices, even if they aren't guild members.

    History

Lochdomhan is rumored to be the landing site of the first humans on the continent. The city's name is believed to come from an ancient human language meaning "Jewel of the Coast".   While originally a bastion of the Old Faith, the worship of the elvish pantheon of gods and goddesses, the city has began to adopt the modern Faith of Caerwyn. Although the Old Faith still has some sites of worship, the city's largest center of worship has recently been converted to a temple to worship Caerwyn.   The city grew due to the number of refugees fleeing the Draconic invasion several decades ago.

    Tourism

    Tavern/Inns:
    1. The Brown Herald - The nicest tavern and in in the city. This inn lies in Centretree, and sees the most diverse lot of patrons. It is ran by Darla Crane, a young woman looking to make a name for herself in the city. Darla can get away with charging 1 gold piece a night due to the popularity of her tavern. Her youthful good looks and flirtatiousness certainly help bring back repeat business as well.
    2. Dead Rat Inn - The Dead Rat Inn is located in Dockside, which typically attracts a lot of travelers coming from the docks. The tavern is named for a dead rat nailed above its doors (the rat is replaced once every week or so... depending on the smell). It is kept by two human brothers, Michael and Gregor Ó Duinn. The beds and food are not fantastic, but the price is right at 2 silver pieces a night.
    3. The Laughing Axe - Ran by the tenacious halfling Orla Blàr, the Laughing Axe is one of the oldest lodgings in the city. It’s located just southeast of the Temple of Caerwyn, and sees a large portion of sailors and travelers as patrons. Those seeking lodging here can find a warm bed and hearty meal for 8 silver pieces a night.
    4. The Squid - The Squid is the newest inn in Lochdoman, constructed only several years ago. It is owned and operated by Cormac Moir, an overweight, slovenly, middle-aged man and recently retired fisherman. Bindson has many friends still in the fishing business, and his connections allow him to serve fresh seafood to his patrons. Though scruffy in appearance, he runs a clean operation and usually has a full house each night. Patrons can find a good meal and a comfortable stay here for 9 silver pieces a night.
    5. The Toad & Duergar Inn - This oddly named inn is located in the Guild Plaza, facing the guild plaza. It is kept by the tiefling Dirrius Night, a snide, though likeable, innkeeper. Due to its location, it sees a lot of travelers in the city visiting the guild halls. Patrons can find comfortable lodgings here for 8 silver pieces a night.
      Places of interest include:
    • Trunkheart University - located just outside of the city walls. It is arguably the most prestigious non-magical academy in the Bastion Realms. The walls of the university itself are surrounded by taverns and brothels catering to the university students.
    • 6. Headmistress's Tower - Sitting in the main plaza of the university is the Headmistress's Tower. The current Headmistress of Trunkheart is Headmistress Zerowyn Etronis. The main floor of the tower acts as a museum of sorts to showcase the University's various success. The floors above are used as administration offices and Etronis's residence itself.
    • The Guild Plaza - One side of the plaza is bordered by the Hone Home Keep and the various guildhalls border the other three sides. Here, artisans of all kinds can gain the benefits of guild membership, and the plaza attracts many potential customers. The guilds are diverse and share the buildings; it’s not uncommon to find cobblers sharing their walls with masons, for example, depending upon the need or urgency for meetings. Each of the halls here are large enough to accommodate multiple guilds without issue.
    • 7. Hone Home Keep - The city castle rises prominently out of the center of the city. The castle is kept off limits to anyone without an appointment or in the company of the Countess, though it is home to her many vassals and servants. Part of the Keep is used as the meeting hall of the Board of Aldermen.
    • 8. Temple of Caerwyn - Originally, the old gods and goddesses were revered by many of those traveling to and from Lochdomhan, and this temple awaited them just off the harbor docks. However, the Church of Caerwyn has recently converted the temple. Patrons are free to rest here, seek treatment from the clerics, and give Caerwyn offerings in exchange for blessings of safe voyage across the sea.
    • 9. Weatherfair Sailor’s Guildhall - The Sailor’s Guild is the oldest guild in the city, noticeably removed from the rest of the guild plaza. It offers membership to seamen with at least semi-permanent residence in Lochdomhan. Guild members construct and repair ships, chart and exchange safe sea routes, and sell or trade sailing equipment. Weatherfair opens its doors to travelers arriving to the city by sea, charging a modest fee for sailors to rest and get a warm meal before they leave again.
    • Lochdomhan Harbor and Dockside - The harbor docks stretch across the city’s northwest side, accommodating over a dozen sea vessels at a time, with room for many more in the harbor itself. The boardwalk is often filled with street vendors and shanties; residents and travelers alike that visit are met with merchants eager for trade. The docks also attract the majority of cutpurses and pickpockets in the city, forcing Lochdomhan's city guard to be particularly vigilant here.
    • 10. Centretree Green - Lochdomhan's more influential commercial area is so named after the park it surrounds. The Green's popularity brings a lot of foot traffic causing a diverse crowd of the city’s residents and travelers.
    • 11. The karabhaile - is an open green space inside the walls for the gathering of Karamin. There is a spring fed watering well in the center of the green. There are usually around a thousand Karamin caravans stationed on the karabhaile at any given day. There is a large portion of Lochdomhan's halfling population that are actually elderly Karamin who, while trying to symbolically maintain their traditional way of life without dealing with the hassle and strain of a nomadic life, remain on Lochdomhan's karabhaile until their death. Almost every Karamin has at least one elderly relative in Lochdomhan.
    • The Elvish Quarter - Due to the general racial tension that exists amongst elves and human in Lochdomhan, the vast majority of Lochdomhan's elvish population lives in the one part of Lochdomhan located on the northern banks of the Clearwater River. The Elvish Quarter is more densely populated than the rest of the city. While elves are safe to move around the city during the day, most find it safer to remain in the Elvish Quarter after dark.
