Keevael's Machine

The Keevael Machine, named after it's creator, Ghuram Keevael, is a device for extracting magic from a human subject. It resembles a chair, to which the subject is strapped down. Then an array of magnets are laid along the person's body. When the machine is activated, these magnets extract the magic. The first Keevael Machine was activated by a tread wheel. Later machines also used hand cranks. Current machines utilize electricity. Though the machine is intended only to extract magic from a living subject, roughly 85% of subjects die in the process.
Access & Availability
The Keevael Machine primarily exists in Linakra, where it is one of the most common sentences given to those who are convicted of practicing illegal magic. It has been duplicated, however, by some crime organizations as a form of execution, rather than magic extraction.
Discovery
The Keevael Machine was invented in 1043 by Ghulam Keevael, a scientist from Linakra, who dedicated his life to the principles of magic extraction. After applying for a grant from the government, he spent several decades practicing on people who had been imprisoned for using magic. He tried several methods, including flushing the magic out with water or other liquids, burning it out with hot metal, and pressing it out with heavy stones, but these only resulted in injured or dead subjects.   When he heard of a new technology in 1030 that attracted metal to it, the magnet, Keevael immediately latched on to the idea of a variety of magnet that could instead attract magic. He spent a decade tinkering with this idea, almost making himself a laughing stock, until he had a breakthrough in 1040 and successfully extracted the magic from a wizard that manipulated fire. He spent the next three years improving upon his new technology, taking meticulous notes as he did so, and in 1043, revealed the new Keevael Machine, which was quickly used upon Mat Meccariello, the leader of an underground wizard group in Linakra's newest territory.   Though the machine killed its first victim, Keevael was honored by the Linakran government, and after he died, Keevael University was built on the site of his old home.
