Ilaen

Ilaen is a city in Evermoor, in the Cruzia Mountains, near the mouth of the Lee River. Is is currently the most populous city in Nideon, with more than 7 million people living in the city, and another 2 million living in the surrounding area. Ilaen also served as the capital for much of the 19th century, before being moved to Roassy in 1978.It is a well-known trade hub and center of the world famous Blue Voice Theater District.

History

Ilaen was initially two separate cities, Roofknight, founded in 1707 along the northern coast of the minor continent, and Adkan, founded 197 years earlier, along the Lee River. These two cities found each other mutually beneficial, as Adkan became a trade hub between the northern mountains and the southern river valley, supplying Roofknight with goods, and Roofknight, in turn, positioned within the mountains, served as a protection for the traders of Adkan. With the founding of Roofknight University in 1779, it became a center of learning. This, as well as new architecture, attracted more and more people. The population of Adkan also continued to grow, for proximity to the university, the promise of jobs, and the progressive atmosphere.   Due to the many cultures that passed through it, Adkan quickly became a city where nearly anyone could find a place they were welcome. Even after the two cities grew into each other, and were officially consolidated in 1823, forming Ilaen, Roofknight, or "Upper Ilaen," remained a home primarily for the wealthy and educated, whereas Adkan, or "lower Ilaen," continued to be home to working class people of a much larger variety of cultures. Even today, the two halves of the city struggle to put up a united front in the social and political realm. Nevertheless, both sides of the city continue to attract visitors. Roofknight, still home to the university, is also now the location of numerous businesses and skyscrapers, earning Ilaen the name, "The City of Glass," whereas Adkan, still home to a variety of interesting cultural artifacts, as well as the Blue Voice Theater District, earned it the name, "City of Delights."
