Great Northern Desert

The Great Northern Desert, also known as the Nulye Desert, is a cold desert occupying most of Huef, as well as Southern Saas, and parts of northern Nefrale. It is known as the home of the Huxoth people. It is the largest desert on Nideon.

Climate

The Great Northern Desert is one of extremes. Due to its higher latitude, it can drop below freezing in the winter, but can also be one of the hottest places on Nideon during the summer. Though most of its precipitation comes in the summer, the northern most part of the desert receives some ice and snow from northern Saas throughout the year. This is one of the harshest areas of the desert.

Wildlife

Despite its harsh conditions, a wide variety of species make it home. It has the largest diversity of lizard populations in all of Nideon. It is also home to mammals including polecats, gazelle, wild donkeys, and even the occasional wolf. Various shrubs and grasses, adapted to the sandy soil and lack of water grow throughout the region, with larger plants which rely more on water growing in oases, such as along the Rippling River.

People and the Desert

The desert is mostly untouched by people, aside from the Huxoth people, who live there. A sovereign nation, the Huxoth protect the desert and guard its borders. This is easy as most people have difficulty crossing the desert without the help of the Huxoth and their Shagibbing planes, or at least a navigator and a study donkey. Those countries which have the desert within their borders, Huef in particular, consider the desert lands as belonging to the Huxoth people and therefore being subject, in part, to different laws. For this reason, people escaping the law have sometimes fled into the desert, but most, unable to garner help from the Huxoth people, died from exposure. In fact, a common form of justice among the Huxoth is to abandon a person beyond a village with neither plane nor donkey.
