Bertram Pfieffer
Bertram Pfieffer was born in 1496 in Diamondheart. The son of a wealthy merchant, Bertram's early life was spent in school, learning languages, classic literature, and politics. At the age of 17, to "get a broader view of the world," he was sent on several trips out of the country, carrying goods for his father. In 1519, he returned permanently to Diamondheart, to take over the business from his father. At the age of 27, he married Ismene Chandler, with whom he had two children, Marcus and Laura. He died in 1554.

History
Bertram and Ismene met at a party and discovered they both had a penchant for literature. Though Ismene was of a lower class than Bertram, he admired her wit. On Ismene's part, Bertram was one of the few men who did not think she read too much to be a proper lady. Bertram considered Ismene equal in the business, and when asked about this decision, he would say, "she's the smarter of the two of us. The only thing sharper than her mind is her tongue." Her sharp tongue, in fact, got her in trouble in public, as people believed that she spoke ill of her husband and treated him cruelly. What appeared as insults to others, however, were not typically taken as such by Bertram, and the two remained close until his death.
