Cait Sidhe

Cait Sidhe are Fae cats, aka Fairy Cats. Each Court keeps one of these clever kitties as an advisor, since they are so uncaring of anyone else that they are incredibly objective. Their curiosity without concern also makes them insightful into the motives and goals of others.

No one is entirely certain if cats first appeared in the Fae Lands or the mortal realms. Some think that some cats simply became too clever and crossed into Fairy to gain magics.

Some believe that they were fae to begin with, but some made a deal with mortals to be pampered in exchange for their wisdom. Then the cats of the mortal realm gave up their full sapience to trick mortals into getting nothing in the deal. This would explain why cats are so entitled and mortals seem to be confused about WHY they would care for a cat.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Cait Sith appear to be normal housecats, although they are almost always pure black with blue, red or green shades in their coat. They tend to be very large, approximately the size of a large lynx or small cheetah.

The first hint that the feline is not a normal cat is their eyes. The color is a striking silver blue or coppery-gold. Those with gold eyes tend to be affiliated with the Seelie Court, while silver tends to be affiliated with the Unseelie Court. There are a few Wild Fae Cait Sith with a forest green eye color.

Additional Information

Domestication

The domestication of Cait Sith is presumptive at best. They are fully sapient beings with only sporadic respect for rank, power, or propriety.

Average Intelligence

Cait Sith are highly intelligent, but seldom educated. This makes them clever with odd gaps in their knowledge. However, they tend toward stealth and eavesdropping to learn more about whatever has caught their eye this time.

Historical Figures

The Cheshire Cat

Cheshur, Chester, or Cheshire, this purple-tinted tiger-striped cat often shows off his magics, floating in the air and causing random parts of his body to disappear. He tends to bring more chaos than other Wild Fae, having an unusual level of comfort with messing with mortal minds.

The Cheshire Cat is the most well-known Cait Sidhe to the mortal realm, being a major player in the story of Alice. The Fae have mixed feelings about the books, given that the writer had made a deal for inspiration. That deal meant he was allowed to explore Fairy for that inspiration.

The Cheshire Cat guided him, keeping him safe from the dangers of Fairy. In return, the mortal wrote the books, leaning on the chaotic nature of the Fairy Cat, and explained all the weirdness inspired by Fairy away as a kind of apologistic drug trip. The Unseelie found this hilarious, in general. The Seelie were not amused.

Grimalkin

Grimalkin may be the most powerful of the Cait Sidhe, though getting her to use that power for anything, really, is nigh impossible. Grimalkin is the advisor to the Droch Banríona, the Queen of the Winter Court in particular. In fact, Morrigana may be the only being that Grimalkin will speak to as an equal... and vice versa. Few Fae require more proof of Grimalkin's power.

Grimalkin is extremely reclusive and seldom answers questions or requests. When she does, most regret bringing her into it. Her dark gray-green coat appears matted and mangy, unless she is in the lands of the Unseelie. In her homeland, she has a distinctly powerful aura.

Puss in Boots

This Seelie Cait Sidhe tabby is most famous for his travels in the mortal realm, recorded for all time by an Italian before the tale was rewritten in its most well-known format by a Frenchman. He tends to seek out those with heroic hearts, rewarding bravery and manners in the face of turmoil.

Kisa

This pale Cait Sidhe with silver-blue highlights and deep gold eyes can turn into a Sidhe woman when kindness is shown to her. As the advisor to the Banríona and the Queen of the Summer Court, she seldom travels to the mortal realm to search out such acts of kindness. When she does, she tends to bless those who are found deserving with wealth and luck.
