Lurue, the Unicorn Queen

Lurue, the Unicorn Queen, is a powerful archfey as well as the goddess of talking animals, worshipped by beasts gifted with speech, animal-like creatures such as unicorns and pegasi, and the occasional mortal. She firmly believes that life is meant to be lived and encourages her followers to live to the fullest and make the most of every day. Lurue has the spirit of a young explorer at heart, often wandering the realms in search of adventure and foolish enemies to lead on a merry chase.   In recent times, Lurue overestimated her abilities when she was tricked and trapped by the devil Dunames in a prison of iron. Using a dark ritual, Dunames siphoned off portions of Lurue's power to summon pegasi and rip off their wings in an infernal ceremony to convert them into nightmares for her troops to ride. Rendered nearly powerless by her iron prison, it took what little strength Lurue could muster to summon a fairy to go for help. That help came in the former of Altmera, druidic holder of the Pink Quintus Gem who unleashed the fury of nature against the devils and set Lurue free. The goddess was ever grateful for the assistance and rewarded the fairy with a great gift of magic for her aid, while Altmera declined any reward.   Lurue then returned to the realm of her mother Selûne to recover from her ordeal, which took many years. In that time, she heard a prayer coming from an intelligent bird named Aviary. Through this prayer she learned of Aviary's mortal companion, a young woman named Leliana in disarray. Leliana had been a cleric of Corellon and became distraught when she learned Corellon cared not for her but only for her power, which he'd planned to use to make war on the drow. Leliana denounced Corellon after this discovery and the angered elf god stripped her of her cleric magic.   Lurue saw something of herself in this girl, stripped of magic much as Lurue herself had been during her imprisonment in iron. She reached out to the girl, who was weary to trust another deity after Corellon's betrayal. But Aviary convinced her otherwise; the magical bird had been Leliana's partner for some years after being gifted to her by a unicorn worshipper of Lurue. As a former cleric of some prominence, Leliana had heard of Lurue but the wound of betrayal was still fresh on her heart. She went to one of her dearest, closest friends for advice and with his encouragement, allowed Lurue to help her. Though the goddess did not know it at the time, she had made her first encounter with the woman who would become her greatest champion.
