Cliff's Edge

A frozen wasteland given life

High above the island, atop one of its tallest mountains, is where one can find Cliff's Edge. Tucked away amongst jagged rock, this village acts as a civilization away from civilization. Its people are strong, hearty, and have adapted to the harsh cold of the mountaintop. They admire honor, justice, and strength above all other qualities, and aim to prove their worth every day, from the moment they wake up, until the moment they go to sleep.

Architecture

Cliff's Edge architecture utilizes the natural cedar trees that grow up the mountains. To avoid structural collapse due to gusts of wind, homes are constructed using logs from these trees, creating cabins for Cliff's Edge's citizens. These homes are regarded for their practicality over their craftsmanship.
Brondby's, one of the largest buildings in Cliff's Edge, is constructed with 2 layers of cedar planks for walls, and large, wooden pillars inside for structural support. The inside of the roof is lined with planks to prevent internal collapse.
Otherwise, Cliff's Edge has some structures constructed with stone from deep within the mountain, such as the Hall of Heroes. These buildings are drastically different from the rest of Cliff's Edge. The majority of the Hall of Heroes is covered in intricate carvings, making it a truly unique creation. It's clear that these buildings have been repurposed by Cliff's Edge's people, but they were likely once used by the Giants.

Economy

The economy in Cliff's Edge is almost entirely self-contained. What little gold the settlement has ends up being stored away, or used to pay outsiders for jobs. Despite their lack of funds, Cliff's Edge is quite prosperous. This is due to their ability to sustain themselves indefinitely. They hunt their own food, build their own homes, etc. This only builds on the many reasons most of the settlement's people avoid leaving the mountain.

History

The history of Cliff's Edge goes back several decades. Thanks in part to the secluded location, Cliff's Edge has been able to gradually grow over time. The reason for the settlement's strange, magical barrier, which obstructs the buffeting snow beyond, is unknown. This is identical for the ancient architecture constructed by the Giants many, many years ago.
Many leaders of Cliff's Edge have come and gone, and most have found themselves a spot in the Hall of Heroes due to their demonstrations of valor, justice, and bravery. The current leader, Vidar Stonefoot, continues the settlement's pattern of strong leaders, and seemingly will do so for years to come.

Culture

Cliff's Edge has a culture based around contribution. Unlike other settlements, everyone in Cliff's Edge is expected to contribute in some fashion, whether it be hunting game or cooking meals. The people of Cliff's Edge are generally quite friendly to one another, but are wary of most outsiders. Every citizen in Cliff's Edge subscribes to a nomadic lifestyle, only trusting those accepted as citizens, as well.

Environment

Cliff's Edge has several strange magical elements at play that seem to be occurring naturally. The mountain Cliff's Edge sits atop is constantly barraged with heavy snow, in seemingly endless amounts. These conditions would normally dissuade any attempts at civilization, but a magical barrier of unknown origin has blocked the harsh weather within a certain radius. This "bubble" of protection is where Cliff's Edge was ultimately settled.
Beyond its arcane environment, Cliff's Edge is a snowy, winter wasteland. Thick cedar forests descend the mountain trail, and vast, empty fields of snow stretch across its peaks. Tall, jagged rocks prevent a majority of the high winds from affecting Cliff's Edge, with some exceptions.

Businesses & Public Structures

  • The Hall of Heroes: An ancient structure that was likely once a museum. Now, it has been converted into a memorial to honor heroes of the past, present, and future.
  • Brondby's: A ski-lodge-style inn and tavern, operated by the resident Servo, Brondby. Provides food and drink for many of Cliff's Edge's people.
  • Muskvad's Muscleium: Effectively a gym, where people can exercise or just kill time. It's also a great place to learn about what goes on outside of Cliff's Edge.
  • The Shiny Pelt: The only shop in Cliff's Edge. At the name suggests, they specialize in selling pelts, but offer a variety of hunting supplies and other basics.
  • The Cragsmith: The smithy of the settlement. It's unique in that the forge was specially designed to work with Cragsteel, making it one-of-a-kind.

Population

The people of Cliff's Edge are decently varied, but consist mainly of Humans. There are some individuals of different races, but Humans make up the majority. To survive in Cliff's Edge, these humans are distinctly fit and have seemingly adapted to the cold, making them, arguably, a subrace of the Human race itself.
