Neirath

The Northern Citadel

Built atop the temperate cliff coast of the Hseian Highlands west of the Verdant Peaks in northern Daeruin, Neirath stands as a beacon of dark elven power. The capital city is built in ascending districts, with the highest being the Magisterial Canton. The Nendrelis Palace adorns the highest cliff, overlooking the city from the front and the open sea from the back. Neirath’s roads interlock around rows of buildings of native blackstone and exotic lumber from the southern lands. Ascending walls, towers, and spires surround the capital with battlements armed by ballistae and arcane cannons facing the sea. The elite wyrmguards patrol the skies, wielding lances and staves. The city is built to project power.

The City of Slaves

While Neirath is a dark elven city with visitors and citizens of many other ancestries, one would have to try very hard to miss the fact that the majority of the city's residents are its slave class. Primarily made up of Snow Elves but also goblinoids, Humans, Dwarves, Orcs, lizardfolk, and others, Neirath is home to an enormous amount of those in bondage. In particular, the generational slavery of snow elves that has persisted in Neirath, and the wider empire, has been a point of extreme tension between Daeruin and Mistvall, with threats of war on the horizon. The conditions of slaves in the capital vary depending on a slew of factors including disposition of the masters or companies involved, type of work required, and even the race of the slaves. In general, laborers in the dangerous mines and construction sites face the most immediate danger while those who serve more affluent owners live a demeaning yet bizarrely gilded life. Some of the city's slaves even achieve notable ranks, such as the favored lifetime slave of Emperor Derarose, his seneschal Jezhor.

Natural Resources

Most of the terrain, while green, is too dry and rocky to support agriculture, so most of the city’s farming and fishing needs are met on the flatter outskirts near the coast. Regarding animal husbandry, dark elven mountaineers collect wool shed from wild mountain goats and herd bighorn sheep for their wool and meat. The city also does trade with eastern goliaths and orcs who herd reindeer. On the lower altitude steps of Neirath, the farmland mainly consists of hardy mountain crops such as barley, rye, kale, and cabbage and herbs such as thyme, rosemary, sage, and echinacea. Salmon, elfscale mackerel, seaweed, and algae supplement the palette as well.
