Dwarves

Nestled in the reaches of the Dhilrhian Mountains of eastern Sol, the Dwarves have carved out an industrious life of crafting and honor for themselves. Sharing a kingdom with the Deep Elves though occupying its surface, they are known as Dwarves which, in the language of the Deep Elves means 'surface dwellers'. Though in reality, they come in a few varieties such as Mountain Dwarves and Cavern Dwarves. In general, most Dwarves are hard working, loyal, and drawn to physical professions like metallurgy, armorsmithing, stonecutting, and building. They are well known around Sol and can be found in many towns and cities, plying their trade as merchants and craftsmen. Though at home, despite sharing a kingdom with the Deep Elves, they run themselves in a pluralistic and decentralized collection of noble republics loosely led by an elected high king from one of the noble families who represents the Dwarves in political relations with the other nations. Their cities, though quite industrious and populated, are mostly homogenous and without much diversity. Around Sol, they're regarded quite well and are seen as hard workers who can be trusted to do the right thing.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Religiously, the Dwarves worship Basorus, Craftsman of the Gods, who is the creator of many divine artifacts of other deities. Additionally, they worship Sabosa, Goddess of Fire, considering her a deity of smithing and war.

Art & Architecture

Dwarven architecture is utilitarian. Buildings are often carefully measured and planned to provide all that they need with the minimal space needed. Accommodations for taller races are hard to come by. In terms of art, the Dwarves prefer stonecutting to other artistic expressions. Due to the lack of wood, glass, dyes, or interest in frivolity, their art tends to be either small stonecutting works depicting religious icons or symbols, or sometimes larger stone murals artistically telling historical events and traditions of the Dwarves. Additionally, they are also skilled at sculpture with their works impressively displayed in city squares. Though in most cases, Dwarves don't like art for its own sake, they consider it a waste of time and artistic professions like musicians or painters aren't respected, they feel art should serve a purpose. Though, paradoxically, certain professions considered artistic by most have a more militaristic flair in Dwarven culture and can then be considered respected; war poets who tell the stories of battle are well received and weaponsmiths or armorsmiths are often seen as the society's artists.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

When born, the patriarch of the family will usually bestow upon a Dwarf a role for it to be pushed in. This can be a worker or warrior usually, but sometimes shamans will intervene and give the child a more specialized path.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Dwarves practice cremation.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Dwarves don't care much for beauty, instead, they like to adorn themselves with crafted decorations.

Gender Ideals

Dwarven society has quite defined gender roles. While both genders are expected to work for the good of society, it is preferred that women work from home. Since Dwarves typically have a lot of children per family, the women have their hands quite full with both looking after them and also acting as the backbone of businesses, taking care of shipping details and getting the proper resources for their male counterparts to produce into products. In terms of social ideals, men are expected to be tough, honorable, and wise, while women are expected to be secretive and guarded. Men are regarded as leaders of their families regardless of seniority.

Courtship Ideals

In their tradition of hard work and having no time for trivial affairs, courtship is quick and honest with Dwarves. To show they're available, they will wear a special amulet when asking a member of the opposite sex for a private engagement. Being indirect and unclear is considered bad form.

Relationship Ideals

Relationship and family customs dictate that the honor of the union is upheld above all else. The man and woman will dedicate their work and life to providing for their family in wealth and comfort. While they are certainly not a cold people, Dwarves do consider emotions secondary to security and efficiency.
