The Core Senate

Once the most powerful organization in the Cluster, now a shadow of itself

This article is a part of Summer Camp 2023 and is still a work in progress.
The ruling body of a large portion of the Cluster, the Core Senate only holds a fraction of the power it once did. Around the events of the Collapse, many of it's members left after being either enraged by the actions of the Senate or disillusioned by their inaction to warnings they received about the rise of Baen Arleth. While the Senate does still exist, it is only made up now by a portion of its original members.   Although the organization is good at policing its member areas inside of the Inner System, the few remnant holdouts that have persisted with their membership outside of the Core sometimes struggle to get an adequate response. This has caused others to leave in the past, a further blow to the strength of the organization.   Despite all setbacks, the Core Senate persists and attempts to do what they can to hold order in the Cluster.

History

When the colonists of the New Terra Mission first arrived in the Orionis Cluster, there was no immediate goal to establish a ruling government. Most leadership at the time still followed the established Mission leadership until New Terra was deemed fully settled and began to form its own leadership roles on the planet. This process repeated in 21 AFT when settlement of Tiforn began after the completion of its five year terraforming process. By the time Lirrbebhionn was settled in 31 AFT, small spats between the planets had begun and it was realized that an overarching form of government was needed to keep the planets in line. Given that humanity before had never had the capacity to reach out past Earth except in the forms of space stations (which were still under the auspice of their respective governments) and had never truly had a single truly ruling body, this was an entirely new endeavour.   Taking inspiration from organizations such as the New United States Senate, the Parliament of the Alliance of Briton, and the Council of the Egyptian Convocation as well as the United Nations, several drafts of how to organize the new governing body were laid out starting in 31 AFT. The leaders of New Terra, Tiforn, and Lirrbebhionn as well as key figures from the New Terra Mission formed what was dubbed the Orionis Council and began to heavily review, reject, and revise these drafts. After four years, the Orionis Council declared in 35 AFT that the three existing planets as well as any future planets that would be terraformed and settled as humanity spread across the Cluster would become members of what would be known as the Senate of Orionis.   As the settled parts of the Cluster grew, so grew the Senate. Eventually, as the area around the first star systems were fully settled and humanity began to spread beyond the Inner System, the name of the organization changed. By 565 AFT when the first planet within the Teceanisis System was settled, those outside of the Inner System were calling the Senate the Core Senate. This was also around the time when the Inner System began to be more largely known as the Core. Eventually the nicknames of both became so pervasive that they stuck permanently and the naming remains to this day - although both original names are still used on official documentation.
