The Silver Grizzly

Terrible food, terrible service. Has all the charm of a wet cat. Avoid at all cost. 0 Stars.
Erakz' Guide to Sevaria, 3rd Edition Revised
Located just off the Open Market on Thirdsouth in the Heartward of Volsinii, the Silver Grizzly Inn and Tavern has long been one of the most popular locations for locals of all stripes to stop by for a meal and a drink or two in the evening. In addition to the bar on the ground level, the Silver Grizzly has a half dozen rooms available for rent as well though, on the average night, only one or two are ever filled as few out-of-towners tend to come by any more.   Founded in the early 680s and replacing an even older tavern on the same site, the Silver Grizzly is owned by the dwarf Balron Bearbreaker, an expatriate of Eboncrown Hold in the eastern Teileberge.

What's On Tap?

Given Volsinii's cosmopolitan nature, Balron has adapted a menu including food from a number of cultures, hiring a team of expert halfling chefs to make sure everything is crafted exactly as the original recipe demands. Various dishes from across Estlund and the Island Nations Confederation can be found, though the more exotic dishes generally require a request some days ahead of time and come with a sizeable price to account for the difficulty of finding many of the ingredients.   Much the same applies to liquor. Balron has contacts in a number of merchant organizations and ensures that his shelves are kept relatively well stocked with an assortment of alcohols from across the world.   Ales, on the other hand, are kept much simpler. Aside from importing staples from his homeland, Balron stocks only brews originating from the Silver Vale, in particular Volsinii itself. On the average night, one can select from among a dozen local brews ranging from ales to lagers to stouts and often more. The best seller, always kept on tap, is a local specialty called Volsinii Amberosia.

Entertainment

To help keep the mood in the tavern lighter, Balron hires locals to mount the small stage next to the door. As most of his patrons are more interested in drink than entertainment, he tends to hire younger entertainers - including poets, bards, and bands - who otherwise have trouble finding places to perform. Indeed, a number of renowned local entertainers - most notably Ventin Erakz - have gotten a start to their career in Balron's establishment.

Alterations

As of 732 Winterwane, Balron has acquired a property adjacent to the Silver Grizzly and is currently working on building a two-story addition (plus basement) on the tavern's south side.

Architecture

The Silver Grizzly is a fairly ordinary mid-5th century Volsinii construction consisting primarily of clay and straw layered over a hand-hewn timber frame. From the outside, little distinguishes it from other nearby building (excepting, of course, the heavy sign that hangs over the tavern's large porch). On the inside, however, Balron has overhauled most of the construction, imitating the style of the taverns of his homeland by replacing the interior floors with a rocky material similar to basalt and layering the walls with wood that varies in shades from white to light grey, creating an almost cavern like appearance.
